FEEDING THE WORLD

With todays two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm
response about the Lords hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the
marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical
numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word one expressed
seven mes. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one
hope; the next three are the founda ons of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one
faith, one bap sm. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all.
While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplica ng the wonders
worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of mul tudes, Ephesians gives us a
more realis c way to live and feed others as the church: by living in
humility and gentleness, by ac ng with pa ence, bearing with each other in
love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who
among us cannot increase the way we feed the church and the world by
living this way? We are always called upon to feed the world in the literal
sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way
we live and act each moment of each day.

Jesus feeds a large crowd with five barley loaves and two fish.

Christs presence in the world

Theres a bit of a missing link in the first two sentences of todays
Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent
out on mission two by two (one who is sent is the meaning of apostle).
Their instruc ons were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal
the sick in Jesus name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come
away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that,
between those two sentences, a look of amazed gra tude and pleasure
crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name,
and how they didnt have to shake the dust o their feet anywhere. They
deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with
Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allowing the
Lord to hear what weve sought to do in his name, our successes, our
failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be for fied for further
work in Gods name. For we, the bap zed, are not only the flock of Jesus
Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the
Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world.

nmero uno, repe do siete veces.

dimensin eclesial. Tambin la expresin para que nada se
pierda es muy querida del evangelista. Luego se describe la
reaccin de la gente. La aclamacin para el evangelista ene
un doble sen do.

important because we cherish the
potency and gi of everyone. It is our
desire to constantly nourish our faith in
the soil of Gods Word and at the table
of the Eucharist, to be a credible
witness of Gods presence in the world
and each others companion on our
journey of faith.
