Experiment #2

DENSITY OF A LIQUID AND A SOLID

Please refer to the formatting guidelines for the Prelab exercise listed on Canvas. It
is also expected that you have read the experimental theory, procedures and data
analysis sections to fully understand the questions below.
PRE-LAB EXERCISE:
1. The density of an Unknown Metal is to be determined from the following data. A
Weigh-Bottle is weighed empty and then weighed filled with water. The bottle is
dried and weighed half-filled with Metal. Water is added to the Metal to fill the bottle
and then weighed. Below are the data:
Mass of Weigh-Bottle (empty)
Mass of Weigh-Bottle with Water
Mass of Weigh-Bottle with Metal
Mass of Weigh-Bottle with Metal and Water
Density of water at lab temperature

32.0755 g
54.3892 g
81.2636 g
97.4546 g
0.994607 g/mL

Mass of Water in filled Weigh-Bottle

Weigh-Bottle Volume (= volume of water in Weigh-Bottle)
Mass of Metal
Mass of Water used to fill bottle containing Metal
Volume of Water above Metal
Volume of Metal
Density of Metal

2. Data from the mass (in grams) and volume (in mL) of an Unknown Liquid is plotted
as Mass (y-axis) as a function Volume (x-axis). The resulting Excel trendline was
given as:
y = 0.8122 x + 0.0444 and R2 = 0.99975.
From this trendline information, what is the density, with units, of the Unknown
Liquid? (Hint: the R2 is not related to the actual density but rather the precision of the
data to fitting a straight line.)
