Humbling Ourselves – Betterness/Bitterness

Proverb 6:1-3 “My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, [if] thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my
son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make
sure thy friend.”
It is possible to go humble ourselves. When Ezra was leading the people, he had them to fast, (“Then I
proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before Eloheynu, to seek of
him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.” Ezra 8:21) that they might be
afflicted. It was a humbling experience. Some things we go through in this walk can humble us. These
things can make us better – if we endure them.

The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay. Can be humbled, or hardened. Can be made better,
or made bitter.

These things can humble us, if we will let them. The T.V.: a gun of Satan, shooting at us. Don’t become
bitter, become better.
- because He’s told us we are blessed when men do certain things to us.

✱ Becoming bitter when you have no right to can have to do with the ways of this society, one’s upbringing
– not getting what we want.

Bitterness/Betterness
I hope we will choose to be made better. Bitterness, like pride, causes people to do unwise things.

One man was hit by a vehicle. He lay all night in the cold. In the morning a policeman kicked him,
thinking he was a drunk. The man told the brothers that it made him very bitter.—So much that he ended
up going out and doing to someone else what had been done to him (ran over someone).

Bitterness causes people to do strange things.

-Attitude not good, nothing good about it, judgment not good. Causes them to behave unwisely.
Sometimes it’s a result of unthankful hearts, or people not seeing all the good that Yahveh is doing for
them.

Bitterness, like pride, is something to be fled from.
