Abstract
Celestial Mechanics is a classical subject in Physics and Mathematics. Most mathematical
studies in the subject are focused on the motion of massive point particles under gravitational
interaction. The system is called conservative since the values of a special function on
phase-space, energy, is conserved under time evolution. In real physical systems energy
is slowly dissipated and this dissipation plays an important role in the long term evolution.
This course is an introduction to the main physical mechanisms of dissipation of energy in
celestial mechanics: hydrodynamic drag and gravitational tide heating. Some dynamical
consequences of these dissipative forces will be discussed.

Prerequisite
Basic notions of Physics, Mechanics, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Partial Differential
Equations.
