Introduction

Imagineforoneminutewhatlifewouldbelikewithoutanycomputersormaterialthings
thatrequiretheuseofacomputerchipsuchasacellphone,Ipad,ormp3player.Forolder
generationsthisisactuallyeasybecausethosegenerationsgrewupwithoutit.However,today's
generationswouldnotknowwhattodo.Itisimperativethen,thatwemakesurethecurrent
generationsunderstandtheimportanceofknowinghowtomaintainandcreatenewcomputers,
computerprograms,andhowtowrite,rewrite,andfixcomputingissues.Instructionofsuch
codingshouldbeginearlyandbemadeavailabletoearlygenerations.Startingwithpreteens
seemstobealogicalplacetostart,astheyhavealreadyhadexposuretosuchitemsalongwitha
potentialinterestinlearninghowtocode.
ThegoalofCaliforniaStateUniversity,MontereyBay(CSUMB)istocreatealearning
environmentthatsupportscurrentpreteengenerations,ages912,incomingtogetherand
learningthebasicsofcomputercoding.TheproposedobjectiveistocreateaniLearnmodule
alongwithtrainingfortheinstructors/TAswhowillbeprovidingthesummercampthroughthe
MontereyBaycampusofCaliforniaStateUniversity.
EightweekshavebeenallotedtocreatethetestiLearnmoduleandtrainingforcamp
instructors.Thiswillincludeafirstaidtrainingsession,navigationoftheiLearnmodule,and
overviewguidelinesetviaStorylineforgeneraltrainingofcampproceduresfortherespective
agegroupofcampers.Costsassociatedwiththedevelopmentofthiscampconsistsoftime
devotedtotheprojectbytheSME(subjectmatterexpert),designers,instructors,andall
personnelinvolved.MaterialsneededforthecreationofiLearn,Storyline,andfirstaidtraining
consistofthecomputersoftware,accesstoaMoodlesitewitheditingenabled,andrelated

informationavailableonfirstaidandCPR.TheiLearnsiteandtrainingwillneedtobetestedby
theSMEandinstructorsinvolvedwiththesummercodingcamppriortopublication.Overall,the
goalistotrainandguidetheinstructorsthroughthetoolsandresourcesneededtorunasmooth
summercodingcamp.
Analysis

NeedAnalysis
CodecampisbeingofferedforthefirstyearintheMontereyBayareabytheComputer
ScienceprogramatCSUMB.Theinstructorsofthecamparewellequippedwiththesubject
mattercodingbutmayormaynothaveverymuchexperienceworkingwithyouth.Since
someoftheinstructorassistants,orTAs,mightcomefromoffcampus,theymayalsonotbe
familiarwiththecampusfacilitiesandequipment.
Themoodlesitetemplatewillofferinstructorsandinstructorassistantssupportby
reviewingnationalfirstaidprocedures,localemergencyprocedures,howtonavigateandusethe
moodlesite,aswellasprovideimportantinformationabouttheuniversityscampusandworker
expectations.Sincetheseinstructorswillbeworkingwithyouth,itwillbenecessarythatcertain
proceduresarewellknownandfollowed.
LearnerAnalysis
Agoodlearneranalysisisimportantforthedesignofaninstructionaldesigndocument
(Morrisonetal.,2013).Theintendedlearnersarethepaidinstructorsleadingthecodecampand
volunteeradvancedhighschoolstudentsorundergraduatesatCSUMB.Theinstructorsare
universityfacultymembersandcomputersciencemajorsintheirjuniororsenioryear.All

instructorsandvolunteersarerequiredtocompletethetrainingbytheWednesdaybeforethe
campbeginsinthesummer2016.
TheintendedlearnersarehighschoolAPvolunteerstudentsCSUMBundergraduate
studentsandCSUMBgraduatestudentsasTeacherAssistantsandaspossiblyinstructors
betweentheages1725yearswithsomeinstructorsbeingexperiencedprofessionalsandhaving
experiencewithonlinecourses.Theinstructorsareexpectedtohavegoodexperienceusing
moodlesites,areaccustomedtotheuniversitylifestyleandsurroundingcampus.Volunteers,on
theotherhand,maynotbefamiliarwiththesurroundingfacilities,norfamiliarusingamoodle
siteoronlinetutorialastheirprimarysourceofimportantinformation.Thetrainingonthe
moodlesitenavigationwillhelpeaseanyunfamiliaritywiththenewsystemandofferreviewfor
instructorswithpreviousexperience.
WorkplaceAnalysis
Thecodecampwillbeconductedwithacombinationofindoorandoutdoor
environments.Theindoorsettingswillincludethecampuslibrary,classrooms,andthedining
facilities,whiletheoutdoorlocationswillincludethebasketballcourts,thecampustrack,and
severalofthecampusquads.Thespecificquadsavailablewillbesubjecttoavailability.These
outdoorlocationswillbeusedforacombinationofgameswhichcaninclude,Frisbeefootball,
soccer,kickball,hopscotch,jumpropeandavarietyofotherapprovedgames.
Thestudentswillhaveresourcesfromcampuslabs,thecampuslibraryandactivity
center.Dependingonavailability,resourcesmayalsoincludeLegorobotics.Oneofthe
constraintsonthecampwillbetimeconstraintsfromothercampusactivitygroupswhichmay

alsorequireareastobeshared.OneoftheotherconstraintswillbetheamountofTA/instructors
availableforthedailyevents.
TheTA/instructorswillallberequiredtocompletetheonlinetrainingandpresenttheir
certificatestotheonsitecoordinatorpriortothestartofthecourse.TA/volunteerscanconsistof
highschoolstudentsandlowerclassmenuniversitystudents.Instructorsmustbejuniororsenior
undergraduatestudentsthathavehadatleastoneyearofcodingclasses.TAsandinstructorsare
preferredtobesourcedfromtheuniversitystudentpools.Instructorsmustbecompetentin
onlineskillsandhaveaccessandtheabilitytousetheMoodlesite.Furthermoretheinstructors
musthavethedesireandmotivationtolearncampproceduresandbefullyinvolvedinthecamp.
OthertaskstobetaughtatthecodecampTA/Instructortrainingwillincludehowtouse
theiLearnsite,firstaidprocedures,andwhattodoinanemergency.
Design
TestInstruments
Simplicityandclarityisusedtokeepdistractionslowandattentionhigh.UsingMayers
multimediaprinciplessupportthelearnersabilitytonavigatethroughthetutorialsandlearnthe
objectives(Clark&Mayer,2011).Tocoverthethreesectionsoftheorientation:sitenavigation,
proceduraltasks,andfirstaidresponsetheassessmentswillbeofferedthroughtheonline
tutorialaStorylineproductandthroughtheiLearnsiteitself.Sincetheassessmentswill
needtobeprogrammedtogivethelearnersimmediatefeedbackwithoutthesupervisors
evaluation,assessmentswillgenerallybemultiplechoice,matching,true/false,draganddrop,
andfillinquestions.Therefore,therewillbenoneedforanindividualtogradeanessayorshort
answer.

Theimmediatefeedbackgivesthelearnerssomereviewofwhattheyunderstoodor
misunderstoodwithoutdelaysothattheycanreviewtheirmistakesandimprovetheirscorethe
nexttimetheytaketheassessments.Giventhatthelearnersshouldgainasmuchasinformation
aspossiblefromthisorientation,alllearnersareexpectedtocompleteandpassallassessments
oftheorientation.Inordertomakethispossible,alllearnersareableandencouragedtoretake
anyoftheassessmentsasoftenasneeded.FollowingGagnsinstructionalprinciples,the
learnersshouldfinallytransferthisknowledgeandapplyittothecodecamp(Gagn,1974,
1977a,1977b,1985ascitedinGredler,2009)

ManagementStrategies
Allassessmentsandtheirresultswillbeavailableforthesupervisortoreviewthroughthe
iLearnsite.Thesupervisorwillhaveaccesstoeachlearnerstestresultsandcompletionoftheir
training.Inadditiontothesupervisorsaccesstotheresults,thelearnerswillalsoreceivea
certificateofcompletionforeachofthethreesections.ThelearnerscanemailthePDFversion
orhandovertheprintedversionofthecompletioncertificatetotheirsupervisor.
Attheendofeachassessment,thelearnerwillreceiveimmediatefeedbacknotonlyon
theirresults,butdetailstotheircorrectandincorrectanswers.Includingformativefeedbackand
allowingthelearnertoretaketheassessmentwillmotivatethelearnertoreviewandbetter
understandthematerial,improvinglikelihoodthatthelearnerwillbetterlearntheobjectives.
Instruction
Instructioninallthreesectionsvary,butgenerallyfollowMayersMultimediaPrinciples
andGagnesinstructionaltheories.Thetutorialsforthefirstaidresponsehavebeencompleted
bytheAmericanRedCrossFamilyFirstAidandCPROnlineAdultandPediatriceLearning
modules(AmericanRedCross,2013),followingbothinstructionaltheoriesandprinciples.Each
lessonbeginswithanintroductionvideo,drawingthelearnertounderstandthevalueofthe
learningobjectives.Eachlessonthensharestheobjectiveswiththelearner,informsthelearner
ofsituationsandproperresponsesusingvideoandbulletpoints,aswellaschallengesuserswith
casestudiesandinteractivereview.Finally,theiLearnsitewillprovideassessmentsthatcanbe
reviewedbythesupervisorwhenlessonsandassessmentsarecompleted.

Similarly,thenavigationandtheproceduraltasksmodulesuseinstructionaltheoriesto
drawinthelearnersandchallengelearners,aswellasusemultimediaprinciplestogiveaclear
andconciseinstruction.AssessmentswithintheStorylineprogramandiLearnmodulewill
coincidewiththeinstruction,makingclearconnectionstothelearningobjectives.
Development
ThedevelopmentoftheiLearnmodulestartedfromapresetshell.Itemswereaddedsuch
aspictures,hyperlinkstoresources,training,andassessmentsthroughthemoduleeditingtools.
AdailyschedulewithopenfoldersforusebytheSMEswereaddedwithinthesite.Discussions
regardingtherequiredmaterialwereaddressedthroughoutthedevelopmentoftheproject.
WithintheiLearnmoduletherearethreeothertrainingtutorialsalongwithassessments.Step
oneoftheiLearntrainingmoduleisdedicatedtothenavigationofthesite.Twowebsitesanda
tutorialvideowerecreatedusingDreamweaverandCamtasia.Thetwowebsiteswereincluded
togivethesitepersonalization.Byaskingforthetraineesnameonsiteone,itprovidesthatname
inthefollowingsiteforamorecomfortableoverallfeel.
Theactualnavigationtutorialwasascreenrecordingofthesitecontainingarrowsand
narrationtopinpointwhereitemsofinterestwerelocated.Thetwomainpartsofthenavigation
tutorialdiscussedwere:navigatingthehomepageandthedailycampschedule.Forknowledge
checks,twoquizzeswereembeddedwithinthetutorialtoassurethetraineesunderstoodthe
content.

toawebsitewherethetrainingbegins.Aftersubmittingtheirname,thetraineesarebroughtto
anotherwebsitewhichcontainstheobjectivesofthetrainingfollowedbyaninformationalvideo
ontheiLearnMoodlesitenavigation.Oncethevideoisover,theywillbeaskedtotakeabrief
quiztoassesswhethertheyhavemetallofthestatedobjectives.
ThesecondportionofthetrainingistitledSteptwo:Instructor/TAtraining.This
interactiveeLearningmodule,Storylinesoftware,willgooverEmergencyprocedures,general
codingsoftwarethatused,ideasforoutdooractivities,settingstudentsupforsuccess,andsetting
instructorsupforsuccess.OncetheeLearningmodulehasbeencompleted,thereisabriefquiz
toreviewandassesswhethereverythingwascoveredeffectively.Thefinalpieceoftrainingisa
webbasedAmericanRedCrossFirstAidandCPRtraining.Thereareeightlessonswithinthe
moduleandallmustbecompletedbeforeatraineecanbecomeaninstructor/TA.Thelessonsare
expectedtotakeaboutonetotwohourstocomplete.Anassessmentfollowingeachlessonis
expectedtobecompletedandpassedinordertoreceiveacompletioncertificatethroughiLearn.
Oncealloftherequirementshavebeencompleted,theCSUMBCodeCampmaycommence.

Evaluation
Usability
Usabilityisoneofthemostimportantfunctionsofaproject.Makingsuretheprojectis
usableandprovidesviablematerialandcontentisthegoal.Ausabilitytestorsurveyisusedto

helpdiscoverinconsistenciesandinaccuraciesbeforetheclientreceivesthefinalproduct.A
usabilitysurveyhasbeencreatedtocapturetheseitemsbeforetheactualuseofthetrainingwill
gointoeffect.Wewillalsoevaluatetheeffectivenessofthetrainingmodulesbyensuringit
reachesourtargetaudience,itisclearandconcise,andallowsforoptimalabsorptionofthe
intendedmaterial.Ourfocusisontheeffectivenessofthetrainingtoolsthemselves,alongwith
thecontentwithineachofthem.Theevaluationwilladdressanyweaknesswithinthedesignand
implementation,alongwithallowingthestrengthstobeobserved.Thefollowingresultswere
recorded.

again,veryeasilyinfutureversions.ContentalsoneedstobeaddedtotheiLearnsitebeforeits
initialuse.

Anothersuggestion/recommendationistoaddasurveytotakeoncethe

traininghasbeencompletedandthentakenagainaftertoweekofcamphasbeencompleted.
Beforeandafterresultscanidentifypotentialissuesorinconsistencieswithinthemodules
themselvesandhoweffectivetheformattingofiLearnsiteactuallyis.Thesesurveyshavebeen
placedinappendixDandE.
Oncethetraininghasbeentestedandthecampasawholehasbeenreviewed,the
formativeevaluation,intheformofaquestionnaire,willbegiventoallowthetraineesto

providetheirfeedbackandsuggestionsforimprovement,alongwiththeprogramdirectorand
SME.
FormativeandSummative
Tohelpevaluatetheprocessofthetraining,theTA/Instructorswillbeaskedtofillouta
surveywithquestionspertainingtothequalityofthetraining.Examplequestionsmightlook
similartothese:Didyoufeelthetrainingcoveredtheobjectivesthatwerepresented?Was
thetrainingclearandconcise?andWhat,ifanything,wouldyouchangedtomakeitmore
effectiveforyou?ForevaluatingtheeffectivenessoftheiLearnmoduleandgeneraltraining,
assessmentsareembeddedwithintheactualtrainingmodulestogivefeedbackimmediatelyto
thetrainee.Thenavigationassessmentswithinthevideomustbetakeninorderforthetraining
toresume.ThefirstaidassessmentsareheldwithintheiLearnmoduleitself.Thesemustbe
takenpriortocampstartingandmustbepassedinordertobecomeaninstructorforthecamp.
Oncetheevaluationshastakenplace,updatesorimprovementmodificationshavebeen
recognized,thetrainingwillbeadjustedandbroughtthroughthetestingprocessonceagain.

LongTermEvaluation
Twogeneralassessmentswillbeprovidedtotheinstructorsonceaftertraininghas
commencedandtheotheraftertheweekofcamphasbeencompleted.Thiswillallowfora
longertermevaluationforcontinualimprovementofthenotonlythetrainingbutthecamp
structureaswell.ExamplesoftheseassessmentshavebeenprovidedintheAppendixDandE.
