Unit 2 Macromolecules: Activity

Part A: Bonds
Watch the following video and answer the questions below:
http://bcs.whfreeman.com/thelifewire/content/chp02/02020.html
Watch the segment: Electron Shells and Chemical Reactivity.
1. How does the number of electrons in the outer shell determine the chemical
reactivity of an atom?

Watch the segment: Covalent Bonds.

2. What is a covalent bond?

3. How many covalent bonds can carbon form?

Watch the segment: Polarity and Hydrogen Bonding

4. How are polar covalent bonds different from other covalent bonds? How are they
the same as other covalent bonds?

5. What is a hydrogen bond?

Watch the segment: Ionic Bonds

6. What are ions?

7. What are ionic bonds?

8. Why does salt dissolve in water?

For a fun review of bonding, I recommend the video below:

Part B: Water & pH

Watch the following video and answer the questions below:
http://www.bcconline.com/biol10rs/Pearson-Animations/water_and_chemistry.swf
1. Why is water polar?

2. What types of solutes dissolve in water?

3. Why does ice float on liquid water?

4. Why does water have high heat capacity?

5. How is the movement of molecules different in ice, gas, and liquid water?

6. What is an acid?

7. What is a base?

8. What happens to the concentration of H+ as pH increases?

9. What happens to the concentration of H+ as pH decreases?

10. How much more acidic is a solution of pH 2 than a solution of pH 3?

11. How much more acidic is a solution of pH 2 than a solution of pH 4?

Part C: Macromolecules
Read about macromolecules (also called biological macromolecules) in your textbook
and the introduction Ive posted on Blackboard.

You may want to use the review questions (item 2 on Blackboard) to help guide your
studying for this section. Focus your readings on answering the review questions and
identifying the terms in the list below.
Use the following list of terms to help you check your understanding. You have a few
options for this portion of the assignment.
1. Create sentences using the terms. I recommend using at least 2 terms in each
sentence.
2. Create an outline that organizes the terms.
3. Create a concept map that organizes the terms. Options for creating concept
maps:
a. Use Paint or other drawing tools to create the map.
b. Use online concept map tools such as:
https://www.text2mindmap.com/
https://bubbl.us/mindmap
c. Draw the concept map by hand. If you do this, you have options for
submitting the concept map:
Take a picture and upload the image. Please make sure I can read
the text in the image.
Drop it off during office hours (LS 109)
Leave it in my mailbox (TE 132)
Mail it to me:

4. If youd like to do something else, thats fine too feel free to be creative!
The only requirement is that you use all the terms in a way that demonstrates your
understanding.
