The Firm

(A movie Review)
By: Sydney Pollack
The Firm runs a deception. It all began when Mitc Mcderee, 5 th in his
class in Harvard Law, was woed relentlessly by the Memphis tax firm of
Bendini, Lambert and Locke. The firm provided him and his wife, Abby, a
lifestyle they had never dreamed of. They were quickly disillusioned by what
comes along with the benefits. And as time goes on, Mitch starts to notice
some unusual characteristics about his employer. Unbeknownst to Mitch, the
FBI had already been looking into this firm acting as a bagmen of Morato
Mafia, shipping their laundered money to offshore banks. To save himself, he
has to use both brain and muscle, outrunning killers and outthinking lawyers
to save both his life and his license to practice law.

These are the instances where some of the Partnership laws apply:

Article 1783 makes the firm, Bendini, Lambert and Locke a particular
partnership through the exercise of their profession or vocation.

Bendini, Lambert and Locke is a front for the Moralto crime family in
Chicago. The reason why employment in the firm is meant to be
permanent, and some of the previous partners have died under
mysterious circumstances at fairly young ages. Article 1770 states that
a partnership must have a lawful object or purpose, and must be
established for the common benefit or interest of the partners. On this
case the firm has an unlawful object. Unlawfulness of the partnership
causes it to be dissolved and the profits and instruments shall be
confiscated in favor of the State. The legal effects of the Judicial
Dissolution then makes the partnership void from the beginning.

The moment Avery confesses to Abby the truth about the firm relates
to Article 1820. Anything a partners says or admits, as long as it is
concerning the partnership affairs and it is within the scope of his
authority, is sufficient evidence against the partnership.

Since there is an unlawful act or omission, loss or injury caused to

Mich, a 3rd person, all partners are liable solidary. In the following case,
obligation is not pro-rata or equal, but a solidary obligation says Article
1824.
