Select the appropriate worksheet (by clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the page) for either the extending
retracting stroke of the cylinder.
Note that the choice of valve can only be selected on the 'EXTENDING' stroke worksheet
Blue boxes are data inputs and green boxes are data outputs. Clicking on a blue box opens an input dialog
box to prompt for the information required.
Data can be input either by clicking on a blue box and typing in the value from the keyboard, or by using th
spinner arrows
(where provided) to increase or decrease the displayed value.
Input the cylinder bore and rod diameters in millimetres together with the second rod diameter if applicable
The actuator load can be input as either a resistive or an over-running load, if both are entered, the program
computes the net load using the convention that resistive loads are positive & over-running loads are nega
Note that when entering the load using the keyboard, the value entered must be in NEWTONS even thoug

Input the maximum pressure at the 'P' port of the valve, back pressure on the 'T' port and the maximum flo
available.
Select a valve and spool combination by using the pull-down menu adjacent to the valve symbol (only on th
'EXTENDING' worksheet).
The valve/spool combination selected will appear in the box at the bottom of the worksheet together with the rated flow (flow at 5 bar pressure drop) of all four flow paths.
The amount of spool opening (from 0 to 100%) can also be input in the box adjacent to the energised (yellow) solenoid.
Cylinder full bore area, annulus area and area ratio are displayed as outputs (green boxes) at the top of the worksheet.
Full bore and annulus pressures and flow rates are also displayed together with the cylinder velocity. If the displayed velocity is zero then either a zero spool opening has
been selected or the 'P' port pressure is insufficient to overcome the load.
If the cylinder cavitates (with an over-running load) the appropriate pressure indication will turn red.
If the maximum input flow is less than the flow capability of the valve then the message 'INLET PRESSURE CANNOT BE MAINTAINED' will appear and all outputs will
disappear. This indicates that the valve is no longer fully throttling the flow and the output data is not reliable. To remedy this situation either reduce the 'P' port pressure,
increase the inlet flow, reduce the spool opening or use a smaller valve/spool combination
It is important to check, especially with direct acting valves, that the valve/spool combination is operating within its power capacity envelope. Power capacity envelopes ca
viewed by selecting the numbered tabs at the bottom of the worksheet (the relevant tab number(s) being displayed in the boxes on the right hand side of the worksheet.
The programme computes and displays the maximum flow through the valve for the extending or retracting stroke together with the total valve pressure drop (P to A plus
T extending, P to B plus A to T retracting).
For direct acting valves, it must also be remembered that power capacity envelopes are normally shown for maximum input signal so if the valve is operating at less than
