What

was the author wanting us to get from this text?

Thethemein

a story is its underlying message, or

'big idea.' In other words, what critical belief about life
is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel,
play, short story or poem? This belief, or idea,
transcends cultural barriers. It is usually universal in
nature. When a theme is universal, it touches on the
human experience, regardless of race or language. It
is what the story means. Often, a piece of writing will
have more than one theme.

Thematic Statement

Theme= Subject + authors opinion of the

subject

Subject= Abstract Noun (feelings, beliefs,

ideas, concepts)

In (title), (Authors Name) (verb that means

**Lets practice what is the Theme for the

excerpt from A Summer Life by Gary Soto

Thematic Statement
In

the excerpt from A Summer Life,

Gary Soto demonstrates that it is
possible to enjoy things that bring
you guilt.
All of the Religious examples would go

with this theme because religion is why

he felt guilty

Imagery
You will highlight all examples of imagery (descriptive
language and controlling imagery) (**2nd Period I made a
mistake last time! On the test we are asking for imagery,
and that means you need to show both descriptive
language and controlling imagery, NOT just D.L.)
1.
Descriptive Language: adjectives/adverbs
**This includes anytime you see a country because it will be
telling us
What Kind of something
-Ex. Mexican Food
-Ask your self What kind if you can answer that then
it is
an example of imagery. So what kind of food? I love
Mexican Food. Or What kind of color? That room is painted
a bright color. Or, what
kind of dog? Thats a mean dog!
2.
Controlling Image: metaphors/similes that create repeating
images

Indirect Characterization
*On

the test, you will not just be highlighting examples of

Indirect Characterization like I previously said. Even though
you are writing, we felt like you would get the points easier
this way (it wasnt meant to hurt you!). You will have to
write a short answer describing the speaker in the story.

Sentence

One= answer in your own words what the

speaker is like/a description of some quality about her.

The

Rest of the paragraph= write 4 examples from the text

that provide evidence for how you knew that about the
speaker. MUST have quotation marks around things you
took from the text and you MUST EXPLAIN the quotes!
