ABSTRACT

Hazar Khawani Peshawar is very adjacent area to the city for constructing a landfill. In
addition to this here passes a small river taking the most of the leachate and spreading it
along the way, all of these leading to complicate the solid waste management problem
and results in polluting the soil and the ground water.
The aim for this study is: the analysis of impacts of leachate due to landfill on
groundwater. Physical and chemical analyses of water samples from eleven boreholes
located near the landfill were carried out to find its impacts on groundwater quality. The
parameters determined included; turbidity, temperature, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS),
Total Hardness, Calcium Hardness, Magnesium Hardness, Bicarbonate, Carbonate,
Chloride, Sulphate, PH, Conductivity, using convectional equipment and standard
laboratory procedures. Most of these parameters indicated traceable pollution but were
below the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water quality. But
some of the samples crossed the WHO standard limits for some parameters. The samples
were collected in winter as well as in summer to find out the seasonal changes. The
results showed that the samples collected from some houses are strongly polluted and
hence require certain levels of treatment before use.
The Hazar Khawani water pollution problem can be minimized by a combination of
measures like good design and construction of the landfill as well as good operation of it.
