Study Abroad Program

Study Spanish in Spain: Salamanca - Alicante
Spanish Courses
Rules of Participation
INTRODUCTION
International studies provide expanded horizons for the students and staff of the Dallas
County Community College District in general and Mountain View College in particular.
Learning is enhanced when the content of the course is related to the environment in
which study takes place. Such study is rigorous and demanding for both the student and
the instructor. Special demands are made of students participating in an international
course for they must bear an unaccustomed cultural burden for those courses offered far
from college, friends, family, and District support. This text has been developed to assist
students in the planning, programming, implementation, and evaluation of a successful
international course. For all involved, the resulting educational experience is worth the
extra efforts required.
INTERNATIONAL COURSE DEFINITION AND RATIONALE
An international course is a course offered abroad. Since this type of course is largely
dependent upon the environment in which it is taught, most of the instructional time
occurs on-site; at least 50% of the contact hours are taught outside the college location.
Courses are taught by regular faculty members of the Dallas County Community College
District. However, THECB rules do permit the use of uniquely qualified instructors from
other locations. Course syllabi, teaching materials, and grading procedures are similar for
on-campus courses. Normally, each course is preceded by a series of orientation sessions
for students and is followed by an evaluation of the course. Such courses have a long
history in higher education and thus provide a time-honored "alternative learning
experience" for students. Not only are abroad courses stimulating, but some skills can be
acquired only in a natural setting. International courses enhance the curriculum by
enlarging the classroom to encompass the world. Students are offered the rare
opportunity to become familiar with the cultures, the arts, and the sciences in other parts
of the world. ALL international courses require the approval of the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board.

round trip airfare to travel to Madrid Spain, and make sure you arrive at the Barajas

STUDENT GUIDELINES

All students enrolling in this international course must
satisfy all DCCCD course and/or program admission requirements and must pay all
appropriate fees. Enrollment as a student in the scheduled international course is required
for participation.
2.
WAIVER OF PREREQUISITES:
If a student does not meet the catalog
requirements for course admissions, a request to waive the requirement(s), including
justification for the waiver, must be approved by the appropriate COSS Division Dean.
Approved waivers will be retained by the Division Office. This will have an extra cost
and is applicable to intermediate courses only.
3.
FINANCIAL AID:
Financial aid may be available for this particular
Summer II Course through MVC. You may want to check with your Financial Aid
advisor and the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship and the DCCCD Scholarship.
4.
STUDENT WAIVERS:
All students participating must have signed Waivers
of Liability on file in the COSS Division Office prior to departure. The Waiver will
include a statement of all known hazards of the trip.
5.
STUDENT CONDUCT:
A student, while on this international course trip,
can be sent home at the students own expense due to misconduct. This should be clearly
understood by students as part of the DCCCD policy from the first scheduled orientation
session. If the student performs in a manner detrimental to the good of the group,
interferes with college teaching, or fails to show respect for others (normal DCCCD
grounds for suspension), the student would no longer be a participant of the course, could
not continue on the trip, and would be sent home. All expenses relating to going home
will be borne solely by the student. The DCCCD Student Code of Conduct can be
found in the DCCCD online Catalog at https://www1.dcccd.edu/catalog/ss/code.cfmp
6.
ADA:
Hotels, houses, trains and other mean of
transportation outside of the United States of America are not required to comply with
ADA requirements and therefore may not have ramps, wide entryways or elevators to
accommodate disabled passengers or devices such as wheelchairs, walkers and motorized
scooters. Due to physical constraints and space limitations, wheelchairs, walkers and
motorized scooters may not be taken aboard motor coaches or other type of transportation
outside of the United States of America.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

INTERNATIONAL COURSES

A student of an international course faces burdens and risks unlike those found in the
campus classroom. By the very nature of the course, a student who participates in an
international course must assume additional responsibilities. Among these there could be
unanswered questions. In order to aid students in understanding these responsibilities, the
following questions are posed and answered:
1.
What standards of academic quality for the course and instruction are
expected?
International courses are equal or surpass the same academic quality and excellence of a
classroom course. The course content does not vary from the content taught in campus
without reasonable justification. There may be times when conditions prohibit a Student
Learning Outcome being met. In teaching course learning outcomes, normal teaching
methods and practices will be observed. Likewise, instructors should observe the same
standards of decorum which exist in a normal classroom setting.
2.
What rules should be established for student conduct?
In order to
insure that participants in college approved international courses maintain public
confidence in the college and the instructor, as well as to uphold the reputation of the
instructor and the college, the following rules are included in written and given to the
students:
a) The illegal use or possession of alcohol or drugs as defined by U. S. law during an
international course is strictly forbidden. The Legal use of alcohol during class activities
also is prohibited unless its use is an integral part of the learning experience, such as in
certain Food Service courses.
b) All laws must be obeyed (U. S. and Host Countrys). Contractual obligations and
standards, as well as the above rules, apply during international courses, and a violation
of such obligations, standards, or rules may subject the violator to disciplinary action or
severance of the relationship to the college.
3.
Is the instructor responsible for the "out-of-class" behavior of the students?
During an international course, it is difficult, if not impossible, to define when the
instructor can take off the "teaching hat." In answering the question, unfortunately clear
guidelines cannot be established, and the legal response is neither a simple "yes" nor
"no." The student, or guardian, must also sign the Waiver of Liability found in these
guidelines.
4.
Is the faculty member responsible if a student breaks the law?
It depends upon whether or not a Court, under specific facts and circumstances, would
find a faculty member negligent. Some examples might help to explain this. If the faculty
member knows students are breaking the law, and some accident occurs as a result of the
law being broken, the faculty member may be found negligent.

Mountain View College Study Abroad Program Summer, Salamanca-Alicante, Spain. Rules of Participation. Prepared by Ulises Rodriguez. Last update: 6/15

7
5.
Can a complete list of "do's" and "don'ts" be compiled?
Unfortunately not everything can be foreseen. A general rule for students to follow
should be, "How would my parents/guardians/family feel if I engaged in a particular
behavior on this field trip?" or "How would my parents/guardians/family feel if the
newspaper headlines were screaming about my behavior and what transpired?"
Therefore, common sense should dictate.
6.
Knowing all of this, is it worth participating in a studies abroad course?
The vast majority of our international courses are repeats by the same faculty. Therefore,
it is assumed that this faculty understands the value of these courses to our students. Also,
it must be remembered that almost all courses pass without incident.
7.
What can Mountain View College do to help prepare students to better
understand their responsibilities?
A clear reading of these instructions is a good beginning. Also, seminars and orientations
for participating students will be held so that discussions of these issues can be better
understood.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
You must have a passport before you can travel abroad. We will verify that all passports
are current. If you have a passport verify that is current by checking the expiration date or
that it will not expire before or during the trip. If you do not have a passport or a current
passport, you need to submit an application as soon as possible. It takes 2 (two) months
for the United States State Department to process your application in order to have your
passport on time. Please visit the US State Department website for more details and
instructions on how to apply for a new or renewal passport.
Before you travel abroad, make sure you make a copy and leave a copy at the COSS
Division and another one with your emergency contact. You should also make another
copy to store safely in the host city, locked in your suitcase.
If you lose your original passport while abroad, you must notify your MVC instructor in
order to go to the nearest US Embassy or Consulate to process a replacement so you can
return home. Always keep an extra passport photo with you!!!
Visa is an entry permit granted by the country allowing you to enter. Spain does not
require US citizens to secure a visa prior to enter. If you are planning to travel within
Europe in general, make sure you research their Visa requirements.
Instructor will collect cell phone numbers, and e-mail addresses in which your emergency
contact can be reached while in Spain for emergencies.
TRAVELING ABORAD
Try to understand and learn important aspects of Spain before you travel, Understanding
religious beliefs, laws and regulation, politics and current events, pop culture, customs,
manners, appropriate dress codes and attires will help you avoid misunderstandings and
allow you to have a wonderful experience. We will have mandatory orientations where
we will talk about those issues.
ACCOMODATIONS
We will have only one type of accommodations: double occupancy with a family. One of
the most exciting aspects of your experience will be learning about Spaniard Culture and
language along with the total immersion aspect, that is why we have arrange for you to
stay with a family. The family which will adopt you for the next four weeks will consider
you part of their own and will treat you as such. They would help you in your learning
process. They will speak Spanish to you, but do not fear if you are a beginner,
communication always occur in many ways!

VALUABLES
You should have multiple ways to get to your money. If your cash is stolen or lost, you
still should have credit cards, ATM/Debit card, or traveler checks.
You should also make two sets of photocopies of your credit cards, travelers checks, and
ATM/Debit cards. Leave one set of copies at home, and take the other set with you,
safeguard it at the University or somewhere is safe.
COMMUNICATIONS
You should research well about Spain and understand the best way to access a phone, the
internet, or the post office. Generally using a United States cell phone while abroad will
be very expensive, and you may not be able to get service in that area. Get information
from US phone companies with access to numbers available in Spain. Once in Alicante,
Spain, we will provide information about local disposable phones, and phone cards for
calling purposes.
THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Understanding what personal and miscellaneous items to take will depend on your
research about Spain. Again, research the country, geographical location, etc. as much as
possible. Which personal items to bring or not to bring will depend upon your
understanding of the summer season and climate of Spain.
We recommend the use of the travel book Eye Witness. It contains maps, places of
interest to visit and how to get places. You might want to bring it along with your own
dictionary. The use of a digital camera, video/still is not only encourage but perhaps
necessary.
You might want to bring a small blanket but it is not necessary. It is necessary that
students have their own personal bar soap and bathroom accessories. It is required that
students bring a backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses and an umbrella. PACK PRUDENTLY;
there are new restrictions on airports.
We will be picked up by the University personnel at Madrid Airport, and transported to
our residency. Classes will begin on Monday. In general, in Spain a basic meal cost
around $20.00. McDonalds are everywhere and the food its OK. Museums entrance
costs around $7.00 and these are not included in the total price of the trip but many others
are free. It might be practical to bring your ATM or credit cards to obtain cash while on
the trip. You might obtain Traveler Checks, or exchange dollar for euros in the United
States at the institution of your preference that offers such services. You might need to
bring or have extra money to buy souvenirs and extra drinks when we are on field trips
and/or visiting museums.

Mountain View College Study Abroad Program Summer, Salamanca-Alicante, Spain. Rules of Participation. Prepared by Ulises Rodriguez. Last update: 6/15

10
The price of your package includes three meals a day. Meals between planes and while
you wait at airports for connecting flights are not included in the price.
MEDICATION
You should inform us that you are on medication. Also check with the US Embassy of
the country to make sure the drug you are using is not illegal. Generally, prescription
medicines must be contained in their original container with the name, prescribing doctor,
and dosage clearly marked. You should also be prepared to present a note from your
doctor explaining why you are taking the drug.
You should make sure to bring enough medicine (including over the counter drugs)
because you may be unable to obtain refills abroad. You should also take enough toiletry
items while traveling. You might not be able to find similar products that will suit your
needs while traveling.
Remember to not carry prescription medicine in your checked luggage.
Students will receive a Spaniard medical insurance policy for the duration of their stay in
Spain in the event of needing to see a local doctor. This policy does NOT cover preexisting conditions, and treatment might be different from that of your family doctor.
Make sure that you notify us of any medical condition that we should know about. Name
of students, passport numbers and medical information should be on file.
You should never bring any foreign made medication into the United States because they
might not be FDA approved.
You should pack all essential medications in your carry-on luggage.
You should talk to your Mountain View College liaison regarding any concerns with
your health in relation to your study abroad program.
Be aware of the water and culinary traditions in the host country before you drink and
eat.
MEDICAL INSURANCE
You will be provided with medical insurance shall the need for medical attention arise.
The insurance is valid all throughout the European Community and for the duration of the
course. This insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, but emergency situations
rising from a pre-existing condition are included. You should also, take all the necessary
insurance preparation to stay healthy while abroad.
Make sure before you travel abroad to research if your current U.S. insurance has
international coverage and the extent of its policy. If necessary, you should purchase a
supplemental health insurance to fit your particular needs.

Mountain View College Study Abroad Program Summer, Salamanca-Alicante, Spain. Rules of Participation. Prepared by Ulises Rodriguez. Last update: 6/15

11
LUGGAGE
You should research to understand the weight limits when packing your luggage. You are
responsible for paying any excess luggage fees. It is recommended that you do not travel
with irreplaceable or expensive items such as jewelry, family heirlooms, etc. Go to the
TSA website and those of the Airline of your choosing to understand and respect the
regulations in place for carry-on and checked luggage.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/index.shtm
CULTURE SHOCK
Research!!! You should research the country, culture, people, tradition, and other aspects
of Spain to minimize the cultural shock. You should also talk to us to gain understanding
of the duration of the program, the potential culture shock you might encounter, and what
adjustments are necessary.
Adjusting to other cultures and countries:
Be acquainted with the local language.
Communicate with home
Understand that culture shock is normal.
PERSONAL SAFETY AND REDUCE RISK
You should discuss how to maintain your personal safety and reduce risk with your future
classmates and with us. You should also visit the US State Department website for any
travel warning. It is extremely important that you be very proactive and responsible
regarding your personal safety.
You should try your best to look and dress as the locals look and dress. When exploring
the town on your own, avoid going out alone, it might bring unwanted attention. Always
take a buddy with you when exploring, especially at night! Do not take shortcuts, alleys,
or poorly lit streets and always, always, leave your valuables behind!!!
Avoid involvement in political discussions or protests. U. S. citizens are often despised
and blamed for government policies and actions abroad. Be intelligent, politely disregard
these types of discussions and do not become a scapegoat.
Never hitchhike or accept rides from strangers. Instead, research local transportation
when traveling on your own. Check the cost and safety of public transportation.
Avoid con-artists and people who pick pockets as best as you would ever know. Some of
them will distract you or bump into you so as to rob you, especially from behind. Be alert
of your surroundings. Avoid keeping your wallet in your back pocket. If carrying a purse,
make sure it does not have easily accessible zippers.

Mountain View College Study Abroad Program Summer, Salamanca-Alicante, Spain. Rules of Participation. Prepared by Ulises Rodriguez. Last update: 6/15

12
You should avoid allowing alcohol to put you in dangerous situations. Abstain from
drinking alcohol because being intoxicated can lower your guard and inhibitions and
make you an easy target for a criminal. The penalty for carrying or selling illegal drugs
can be severe, the worst being the death penalty. Be aware of local laws.
You should never carry any items or luggage for anyone other than yourself. It might
contain illegal drugs, weapons or other illegal and dangerous items and you may be in
trouble or even arrested if such items are found in your possession.
YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR MOUNTAIN VIEW FACULTY LIAISON
INFORMED ABOUT ANY EXTRA CURRICULAR TRAVEL PLANS.
You should make sure you know where the local hospital, police station or fire station or
emergency service is located or how to contact them. Keep this directory with you at all
times. The United States uses 911 as an emergency number, but that might not be the
same number use abroad.
You should avoid providing free information regarding yourself or fellow students to
strangers.
You must know the location of the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate!!!
Do not assume that the Mountain View College Liaison, the DCCCD International
Studies Office, or the U.S. Government can get you out of imprisonment abroad. The
Embassy or Consulate can provide assistance such as visiting you once in jail, notify your
family of the arrest, provide you a list of local attorneys, and monitor your treatment
while you are in jail. But they cannot demand your release, pay your attorneys fees or
represent you in trial. You must know and adhere to local laws and regulations once you
arrive in that country.
CURRENCY
The currency in Spain is the Euro, which exchange rate fluctuates from time to time. You
should be attentive to economic news to stay up-to-date about the daily exchange.
