Answer:

Question 12: Differentiate between gas and vapour.

Answer:
Gas: It can be defined as the state of a substance in which the evaporation form the liquid state is
complete. Examples: CO2, air, N2, O2 etc. are taken as gases within the limits of temperature and
pressure in thermodynamics.
Vapour: Vapour is defined as the state of a substance in which the evaporation from the liquid state is
incomplete. Example: Steam contains water particles.
Question 13: Derive relation between Cp and Cv.
Answer:

NUMERICALS
1. Find the characteristic gas constant for H 2, O2 and CO2 if their molecular mass are 2, 32 and
44 kg / kgmol respectively.
2. Air at 20 bar occupies a volume of 0.2 m3 at a temperature of 300 K. What shall be its volume
if this air expands upto 2 bar pressure at constant temperature?
3. A gas at 5 bar occupies a volume of 1 m 3 at 400 K. This gas expands till its pressure becomes
0.5 bar and temperature drops to 280 K. Find: (i) mass of gas, (ii) final volume of gas, (iii)
molecular mass of gas per kgmol.
4. Find the specific volume and density of gas at a pressure of 10 bar and a temperature of 327
o
C. The molecular weight of the gas is 42.4.
5. A certain oxygen cylinder has a capacity of 20 litres and contains oxygen at a pressure of 3
MPa and a temperature of 20 oC. The stop valve is opened and some oxygen is used. If the
pressure and temperature of oxygen left in the cylinder falls to 1.8 MPa and 16 oC
respectively, determine the mass of oxygen used.
