Just In Time Social/Ethical Lesson: Safe and Effective Web-Searching

Just In Time Social/Ethical Lesson: Safe and Effective Web-Searching

For this lesson, students were asked to create a lesson about safe and effective websearches within our grade level and content area. The following lesson plan is written for
Kindergarten students and all subjects. Teaching students how to evaluate a website for
credibility must be second only to teaching them how to first do safe web searches. After
students learn how to do safe web searches, then they can begin to evaluate the website for
credibility.
Lesson Plan
For this lesson plan, I created an info-graphic. This info-graphic can be used in grades K3, but is intended to be used in Kindergarten. This would be an effective resource to hand out to
parents or other teachers. The info-graphic can be found here: (copy and paste the link into the
browser or hit control + click to follow link)

The way I would use this in the classroom would be to first put it somewhere close to
where the technology is going to be used; in the case of my classroom, that would be the circle
time area.
To teach this the first time I would take the following steps:

Have students watch the ABCya! Cyber Five video (ABCya!, 2015).

After the video, students and teacher would discuss the rules found in the video.

Students would be asked for a relevant subject to search for.

Teacher would demonstrate how to search for a subject.

Students and teacher would look at three webpages made available by the search.

While looking at the webpages-teacher would discuss the questions (while writing
the answers down) of the 5 Ws of Website Evaluation, (Schrock, 2015).

As a follow up activity, the infographic (above) would be sent home to be used

with future homework.
Conclusion

My hope is that the infographic I created is an effective resource for parents and other
educators. It is essential for teachers of young students to lay the foundations in all subjects.
However, as teachers of 21st century learners, one of the foundations must be how to be safe and
effective while doing web searches. The internet is such an essential part of daily 21st century life
and students need to learn how to use it in a way that will support not only their education, but
their everyday life.
