Chapter 1(summary)

We meet Jonas, a boy who is nervous about whats going to

happen in November. After that we learn that he lives in a
place known as the community and that the supplies are
brought by a cargo plane and that he was frightened by it
when it was overhead. Soon after, the loudspeakers
announced that the pilot was released because he flew by
accident. Jonas is feeing apprehensive and is careful with
language, everybody is-at school Asher (his friend) is being
laughed at for talking too fast. At the dinner each member of
the family expresses their feelings. Nelly talks about some
visitors at school who didnt obey the rules. The father, a
nurturer, talks about his work- he is concerned about a
newborn child. Then Jonas's Mother, who works at the
Department of Justice, talks about her feelings. Today she
had to deal with a "repeat offender," someone who keeps
breaking the rules. Next, we discover that one can be
released for breaking the rules, being too old and that even
the newborn could be released if they are sick. When is Jonas
turn, he decides to talk with his parents about the Ceremony
of fifteen.
