What Makes A Good Student Observer?
1. Look for Lesson Clarity the teachers ability to speak clearly and directly and to
organize and structure content at the students level of understanding. Note
directions given, organizers used, instructional media, and review and summary of
the lesson.
2. Measure Student Success Note how the teacher organizes lessons that connect
prior learning, how he or she makes gradual transitions to new content, and
controls the pace and momentum building towards exams and evaluations.
3. Look for Higher Thought Processes and Performance Outcomes critical
thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving behaviors, not always measured by tests.
4. Focus on Classroom Management how the teacher organizes the classroom and
anticipates and responds to student behavior to provide an environment for
efficient learning. Note how the teacher orchestrates and facilitates learning with
classroom management skills.
5. Consider the Learning Climate the physical and emotional environment of the
classroom. Note how students feel about themselves, about one another, and about
their classroom, and which activities and materials promote the feelings most
conducive to learning.
