Soviet Montage
The contribution of Soviet film theorists to global cinema was Montage theory.
The theory was to understand and create cinema that relies on editing. Montage
is French for assembly or editing. The Soviet Montage movement started in
1924/25 and ended at 1930. During these six to five years of the montages
existence fewer than thirty films were made in the style, however the films were
highly influential
soviet montage is a film technique used to manipulate peoples minds in this
case the general public by editing the film and shots they do this by changing
the speed and motion of the shots and adding music to get you too feel the
mood they want you to feel. This is done for a political purpose to promote
patriotism in order for the Russian public to back the Soviet Union.
The soviet montage is based on the October revolution they use a montage to
present the event in many different ways to present it in different moods
During the montage they played an upbeat piece of music to bring the mood of
happiness in to show its a happy time and the revolution was a positive event.
Sergei Eisenstein- Though not the inventor of montage, Eisenstein codified its
use in Soviet and international filmmaking and theory. Beginning with his initial
work in the Proletkult, Eisenstein adapted montage to the cinema and expanded
his theories throughout his career to encompass the internal nature of the image.
He was the most outspoken and ardent advocate of montage as revolutionary
form. His work has been divided into two periods. The first is characterised by

Montage is a film editing technique in which series of short shots are editing
normally accompanied with music into a sequence to shorten the time it takes to
convey information. It was introduced by Eisenstein, an early soviet Director to
convey political views.

Barack Obama Obama for America
Obamas advert shows primarily him discussing what he wants to do as President
whilst showing short clips of him visiting middle class families and being friendly
amongst them. The subconsciously identifies Obama as a caring man who wants
to do as he says.
David Cameron Local election campaigning
Davids advert shows David discussing what he is going to do in the run up to the
election amongst him visiting children in the hospital and old people homes. The

clips help the viewer understand what his policies are and what he cares about
without him having to tell the viewer.
