Question 2

Read the text below. Then, answer questions (a) (j)

The orang-utans are considered as exclusive great apes of Asia. They are native to Malaysia and
Indonesia. Orang-utans can be separated into two species: the Borneo orang-utan and the Sumatran
orang-utan. Orang-utans are arboreal creatures they spend most of their time on trees. The term for
orang-utan comes from the Malay and Indonesia words orang meaning person and hutan meaning
forest". They have reddish-brown or orange-coloured long hair.
Males and females differ in size and appearance. Dominant adult males have distinctive cheek
pads and produce long calls that attract females and intimidate rivals. The "long call" can be heard 1.2
miles (2 kilometres) away. Younger males do not have these characteristics and resemble adult females.
Orang-utans are more reclusive than other apes.
Males are loners. They are highly intelligent; they use a variety of sophisticated tools and construct
elaborate sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. They use large leaves as umbrellas and
shelters to protect themselves from the common rain. They forage for food during daylight hours. Most of
their diet consists of fruits and leaves gathered from rain forest trees. They also eat barks, insects and, on
rare occasions, meat.
Conversion of vast areas of tropical forest to oil palm plantations, hunting and the illegal pet has
rapidly decreased the Orang-utans habitat. A number of organisations are working for the rescue,
rehabilitation and reintroduction of orang-utans. The largest of these is the Borneo Orang-utan Survival
Foundation, founded by conservationist Willie Smits.

Question 4
Read the email from Haniz to Kamariah. Then answer the questions that follow.
6

Dear Kamariah,
Thank you for the card that you sent. I have pinned it on my personal noticeboard at home. How is
everyone in your family? I hope everyone is well rested after the holiday.
I am flattered that you have written to seek my advice on how to help your friend. Emily, overcome
her shyness. Well, all of us experience shyness in our lives. However, it shouldnt make us feel lonely or
affect our self-esteem.
This is what you can do to help Emily. First, empathise with her situation. Tell her you know how
she feels and that it is all right to feel anxious about speaking in a group. Allow her to tell you how she
feels. Tell her about your own bouts of shyness. She will not feel all alone.
Then, you can invite Emily to an outing with your friends. This will give her the opportunity to
interact with different people. She will grow more comfortable in groups if she continues to participate in
social interactions. She will not feel all alone either because you are there to give her support.
It would also be a good thing if you could tell her to stop thinking of herself as a shy person. When
she keeps thinking that she is shy, she will continue to act that way to fit the label. Ask her to think about
how to be a confident person.
You can be a role model to her as well. She will observe how you interact with your friends or
initiate a conversation. She can model that behavior to help overcome her shyness.
I hope these tips will help you bring your friend out of her shell. Please let me know how everything
turns out. I wish you the best of luck.
Your cousin,
Haniz
