SCHOOL ASSESSMENT: TBHS

Active and healthy school assessment for Trevor Browne High School, Phoenix, Arizona.

(Active and Healthy Schools Program 2015)

I believe this survey to target elementary schools, and is skewed to such results. High
School students are not afforded recess, or snack breaks, and there are no after-school programs,

unless the students participate in sports. The school does not offer walking buddies or fit
programs for outside of school. All of these things are seen at the elementary level, and therefore
if these questions were not asked, the school may have received a higher score.

School Assessment

Trevor Browne High School is similar to most high schools in the nation when it comes
to discussing health and physical activity. Two of the areas of strength for this school would be
that the teachers are creating classroom activities that allow students to move around the
classroom so that the students are not stationary one hundred percent of the time, and healthy
lunches are being offered in accordance with the national school nutrition program. Two of the
areas that are in need of improvement for TBHS are there are no healthy eating or physical
activity propaganda posted throughout the school, and there are no activity programs available
for students to join. These strengths and weakness are assessed in the school tracker, which come
from results based on my own observations.
The first thing that could be improved in the school is create a club for both students and
teachers to join. The club would be a fit club that would give students that do not make a sports
team the opportunity to be part of something that would enable them to be physically active and
gain knowledge of healthy habits. The club would be able to meet daily after school for a fitness
activity, and they would be able to fund raise or pay for outings to places like Sky Zone
Trampoline Park for other fitness activities. Parents would also be invited to join and get
involved in fitness during these outings. To solve the healthy eating and physical activity
awareness problem, the club would also be responsible for posting banners and awareness
throughout the school, and would set up a booth on occasion at the school to encourage others to
be healthy and fit. Hopefully, this increased awareness will create a healthier environment for all
students.
The information presented in the School Assessment Tool could be shown to the
administration in a meeting and it would be presented to show where the school is lacking. It

might even be used in a grant proposal to get the school are larger fitness center or new gym
equipment. The school administration would look for ways to improve, and would be inclined to
something like a fit club taking on some of the administrative duties related to the schools
downfalls. The information on what the school is lacking could also support my signature
assignment to know that students arent being well enough informed on water consumption. I
might want to include urine color charts in every restroom to raise awareness for hydration.
Trevor Browne High School is a public school that is part of the Phoenix Union High
School District. The school is a Title I school composed of about 3,200 students for the 2015-16
academic year. Of that number about 94% Hispanic with all other races making up less than 1%
each of the schools population (SchoolDigger 2014). The number of ELLs was not available to
me for this assignment, but the student to teacher ratio is roughly 23:1 (SchoolDigger 2014). The
area surrounding the school is suburban with many fast food chains and grocery stores.
According to the AZED website, the school received C for the 2013-14 Academic year, with
annual measurable objectives not met. The school has recently hired a lot of new staff and
faculty with hopes of improving things for the coming years.
