Introduction
Objectives
After completing this subject, the student will be able to:
Describe the nature and scope of the building
construction industry using lecture notes and
references.

Understand individual building components and the

details necessitates understanding the guiding
performance requirements, process of manufacture
and assembly, formwork systems..etc.

Introduction

Objectives

Follow of broad range of "good" solutions during

construction process.

Identify the opportunities for "invention".

Write a project report for the construction phases of

a project while visiting the site works.

Introduction

Definition

Construction is the mobilization and utilization of

capital and specialized personnel, materials, and
equipment to assemble materials and equipment on
a specific site in accordance with drawings,
specifications, and contract documents prepared to
serve the purposes of a client (Ricketts 2004)

Introduction

Definition

Structures construction deals with the procedure of

constructing structures and the materials used for
the structures, also deals with the tools and
equipments used for each work and the way of
implementing the works

Structures are assembled outdoors on all types of

sites and are subject to all kinds of weather

Introduction
The significant requirements for any building are:
1. Safety:
The structure should withstand all service loads
safely without any problems (failure)

Introduction
2. Cost:
Minimizing the construction cost by using
optimum methods and materials without affecting
the safety (using economic and available materials)
3. Practicability:
The construction material and labors could be able
to implement the construction of structure
elements
. The compatibility between the above requirements
is very important so that the structure became safe,
economic and constructible

Implementation Style

Cast-In-Situ Building:
Almost all elements and work items of building will
construct on site project, this type of construction is
suitable for all residential and public buildings

Building Construction Categories

Implementation Style

Precast:
In this type of construction all structural elements
(not included foundation) are fabricated in a
precast plant and transported to the construction
site for assembly. It is more economic and faster.

Transferring loads

Structural Building (Framing):

The loads are transferred from super structure to the
sub-structure by the slabs, beams and columns. This
type is useful for multi-story building. Concrete or
steel construction may use.

Transferring loads

Non Framing Building:

Also called bearing wall building, the loads are
transferred to the foundation by the bearing walls
which are made of natural stone, concrete blocks,
bricks. Useful for small building such as houses

Combination between bearing wall and Framing:

Civil engineers can be heavily involved in all of

these areas of construction, although fewer are
involved in residential. Due to the differences in
each of these market areas, most engineers
specialize in only one or two of the areas during
their careers
The reason for such specialization is that
construction methods, supervisory skills, labour,
and equipment are considerably different for each
of the categories
