MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
AISI 4140 LOW ALLOY STEEL
‘API GA, 248-321 HBW
BARSTOCK AND FORGINGS
WEAR BUSHINGS
4.0 SCOPE:
‘This specification defines the requirements for hot worked 4140 low alloy steel forgings and barstack used
for wear bushings,
2.0 MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS:
24
22
23
Melting Practice
‘The steel shall be metted using one of the following procedures
A. Electric Fumace followed by Vacuum Degassing (FVD) or Argon
(Oxygen Decarburization (EFAQD),
B. Electric Fumace Vacuum Are Degessing (EFVAD).
Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM).
D. Any of the above or Electric Furnace followed by Vacuum Arc Remelt
(VAR) or Electroslag Remetting (ESR).
2.4.1 Material supplied to this specification shall be made to a fully killed fine grain melting
practice,
Forging Practice
The degree of hot work shall be sulicient to produce @ wrought grain structure throughout all
sections of the forgings or bar. The minimum forging reduction ratio shall be 3,0 to 1.
Material Quality
‘The material supplier shall guarantee thet the forgings andlor bars are homageneous end free of
bursts, pipes, banding, seams, cracks, porosity or any other defects which are detrimental to the
mechznical properties or machining properties of the materia.
3.0 HEAT TREATMENT:
34
Equipment
All heat treatment equipment used for production material and the Qualification Test Coupon,
(QTC) shall be qualified,

‘Qualification shall be done in accordance with one of the following,
A. MIL-H-6875H, Section 3
B. Bntish Standard M54: 1982, Section 5
Appendix H, API6A, 17th Edition
D. A written procedure thet has been submitted to and approved by
Cameron Metallurgy.
32 Furnace Loading
Parts shall be loaded such that the presence of one part does not adversely affect the heat threat
response of another in the same load,
3.3 Heat Treatment Procedure (Note 1)
Fumace set points shall be within the temperature range specified for the corresponding heat
treatment cycle
1
Optional: Normalize at 1600-1675°F (886-913°C), Cycle time shall be
determined the largest cross sectional thickness and shall correspond to %
hour per inch of thickness plus one hour minimum. Air cool. (Note 2)
Optional: Temper after normalization at 1150-1300°F (621-704°C). Cycle
time shall be determined by the largest cross sectional thickness and shall
‘correspond to % hour per inch of thickness plus one hour minimum,
Austentize at 1550-1625°F (843-885°C). Cycle time shall be determined
by the largest cross sectional thickness and shall correspond to % hour per
inch of thickness plus one hour minimum.
il or polymer quench,
‘Temper at 1000-1250°F (538-667°C). Cycle time shall be determined by
the largest cross sectional thickness and shall correspond to % hour per
inch of thickness plus one hour minimum.
‘Air cool to below 400°F (204°C).
Retempering to meet the mechanical property requirements of Section 6.0
may be performed by repeating steps 5 and 6
‘The above time and temperatures are to be determined by furnace control set point thermocouples,
‘Time at temperature begins when the furnaces atmosphere has reached set point temperature.
Note 1 If the normalizing, austenitizing, or tempering cycles use either a thermocouple in contact
with the parts being heat treated or a thermocouple in contact with a representative heat
sink the time at temperature shall be one hour minimum. Use of the contact temperature
monitoring method shal be noted in the records submitted to Cameron

Note 2: Barstock with a diameter of six inches or less does not require the normalization heat
treatment operation. The normalization of six inches and less barstock is at the option of
the manufacturer.
4.0 WELDING OF MATERIAL:
Welding and weld repair of material shall require the approval of Cameron Product Engineering.
5.0 NDE:
Nondestructive examination shall be performed as required by the Cameron engineering bill of material
6.0 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS:
6.1 Chemical Composition
Parts shall exhibit a chemical composition within the limits of Table 1 and shall be determined on a
heat basis (or a remelt ingot basis for remelt grade materials) using the latest revision of an industry
recognized standard,
