Calculation for bearing pressure from settlement criteria
Since the foundation width is 11m (>6m), it is a raft foundation The value of 55t/m2 is net safe bearing capacity which is governed by shear failure criterion Now, to calculate the net safe bearing pressure from settlement criterion As per Teng, net safe bearing pressure of raft is qns = 0.07*(N-3)*Rw*Cd*Sa, t/m2 qns = Net safe bearing pressure N = SPT value = 20 (Assumed for angle of internal friction of 36 degrees) Rw = 0.5 (Assuming water table at the base of footing) Cd = Depth correction factor = 1+D/B = 1+ (1.5/11) = 1.14 Sa = permissible settlement = 60 mm qns = 0.07*(20-3)*0.5*1.14*60 = 40.7 t/m2 Therefore the allowable bearing pressure is lesser of net safe bearing capacity and net safer bearing pressure and recommended as 40.7 t/m2. In case of Earthquake load combination bearing capacity shall be increased by 25% as per IS 1893.
