How to Plant a Petunia

This garden project is focused on how to plant a petunia. Throughout this project, the
students will learn basic flower terminology, and how to implement the steps involved in
planting a petunia from seed. They will also be given the chance to answer open-ended questions
about what they learned, while executing the student objectives.
Teacher Instructions
For the preparation step of this garden project, you will need to address basic
terminology in planting a petunia flower which also includes the materials needed.
Basic terminology:

Petunia- A type of flower.

Seed- The beginning of a flowers life.
Faded- To become less bright (Merriam-Webster-Webster, 2105).
Petal- One of the soft colorful parts of a flower (Merriam-Webster, 2015)

Materials:

Ames Hand Transplanter with Wood Handle, $3.97 each (Homedepot, 2015)
Petunia Seed Pack, $1.25 each (Homedepot, 2015)
Soft Jersey Kids Green/Red/Blue Gloves, 3pairs, $8.47 each (Homedepot, 2015)
8 ounce cup
12 inch school ruler

Assign partners; each pair will receive one petunia seed, an area to plant and tools

(i.e. gloves, ruler, 8 ounce cup and shovel)

In the garden, each flower seed should be one foot away from each other
Assign which student holds the seed and waters, and who holds the shovel and digs
Below, go through directions 1-5 with students
To begin take your shovel
Dig a hole about 6 inches deep using a ruler and placing the dirt next to the hole
Drop your petunia seed inside the hole you have dug
Take your shovel or use your hands and cover the hole up with the dirt gently

5. Water the covered area with one cup, once a week

Student Questions:

Did you use the shovel when filling in your hole, or did you use your hands? Explain

why?
How much water will be used?
How often should you water?

Student Objectives:

After the completion of the program, the students will recall how many times a week to

water the petunias with no errors in their description.

On request, the students will be able to describe at least three of the five steps in planting

a petunia.
When given the necessary supplies, the students will be able to utilize and measure the 8
ounce cup when watering the petunia once a week, with no more than two errors a month.

aid the students in knowledge, comprehension and application. Three behavioral objectives the
students will be able to demonstrate are:
