An exacerbation of hypoglycaemia attacks (discovered during early years of medical

training).

These on their own, would be sufficient to accentuate the

sensitivity of the alcoholic to inner experiences. When there
is also instability of personality., the hypoglycaemre can
enduce schizophrenic and paranoic outbursts. We deal with
hypoglycaemia in a later section.

With the disgust, there came a catharsis — a

surfacing of elements of the Dweller on the
Threshold^ at a time when the psyche is least
ready and able to deal with them.

It is well known that when a man treads the Path, all that is
good and all that is evil rises in him so that he is forced into a
mighty confrontation with those elements of his nature. Those
which are involutionarv, constitute the components of his
"Dweller". Those which are evolutionary, or good, constitute
fragments of his fast-coalescing "Angel of the Shining
Presence'"', guardian of the door (for him) of initiation.

•The Dionysian cults were well aware that alcohol promoted this abreaction so
precious and desirous to the disciple. It is worth considering the matter in some
detail in order to understand the esoteric aspects of alcoholism.

It will help the healer to review some of the problems encountered by the disciple in
dealing with mental and emotional disorders of the lower triad in a process known
as abreaction.

With his increased sensitivity, with his

greater strength, and with purpose and
direction clear in his mind, the disciple
accepts the challenge presented not only by
surfacing memories and experiences of this
life, but of previous lives, which together
have formed his present dweller on the
threshold of the consciousness at this early
stage of his discipleship. The dweller is a
loathsome entity, its components are astral
matter of the lowest orders. It preys on the
neophyte drawing its substance from him
during times of fear, worry, horror and other
negative thinking during which the astral
body (not yet integrated) haemorrhages.
The dweller forms a negative vortex in a
force field of which the chela is the positive
and donating pole. The dispatch of this
entity comes when it is confronted and
recognised for what it is. The flow of auric
energies towards it ceases and from sheer
strangulation it flags and withers. But it is
