DNA Technology Choice Board

*Directions You must choose 1 from each category (10pts, 15pts, or 25pts) and complete it for 50pts total. You will
turn them in all at the same time.
10 pts
Genetic Engineering Concept
Map Using the following types
selective breeding, cloning,
manipulating DNA, recombinant
DNA, transgenic organisms, DNA
fingerprinting, GMOs
Vocabulary
a. Using the words above, define
them and use pictures from
online or magazines to illustrate
them
b. Create Frayer models for each
word (see back of sheet for
example)

15 pts
Create/Write a skit using one
type of genetic engineering
Ex. Genetic counseling for a
couple who are about to have
children

Create a poster illustrating 1

type of DNA technology must
include pictures and details.

Create a sales catalog advertising

the different type of
technologies that someone
could order from (pretend the
average person can order all the
technologies for themselves)
Must include pictures
Create a cartoon strip/comic
strip highlighting 2 types of DNA
technology.

Complete the DNA Technology

WebQuest see attached

Frayer Model Example:

Pretend you are a teacher and

create a quiz.
a.Create a quiz about the
vocabulary words (must include
an answer key).
b. Create a crossword puzzle
(must include an answer key)

25pts
Research a real life court case
that used some type of DNA
technology to either prove the
person was innocent or guilty
Write a synopsis of it to present
to the class
a. Using technology, come up
with your own idea for
presenting your vocabulary
words (crossword puzzle, story,
concept map, etc.)
b. Create a song, rap, or poem
using the vocab words.

In 5 years, the government is

going to legalize cloning of
humans. Write a
letter/newspaper article about
why this technology should or
should not be made legal.
Research 1 scientist that was
involved in ground breaking DNA
technology techniques and write
a story about the scientist from
their perspective talking about
their life when they were
involved in this research.

WebQuest:

DNA Technology Webquest

You are going to find out about DNA technology using the following websites. Then you will
prepare information for a class discussion about the technology. You will need to answer the
following questions, which will be collected. While you are investigating, start thinking about
what you think about transgenic crops and cloning. Do you think scientists should be doing
this? Why or Why not? Remember to think like a scientist, and have facts and information to
back up your opinions.
Answer these questions (you might need to use another sheet of paper):
1) What is recombinant DNA?
2) How is it made: Draw a diagram.
3) What is a transgenic crop?
4) What is the difference between genetic engineering and traditional crop breeding?
5) What are potential risks of transgenic crops?
6) What are the potential benefits of transgenic crops?
7) What is gene therapy?
8) What is gene therapy used for?
9) How is an animal cloned?
10) How is a cloned animal different from one produced by sexual reproduction?
11) What is the human genome project?
12) For 5 diseases, find what chromosome they are found on:

13) Go to http://www.livebinders.com/play/play/225759 and Click on the Tabs at the top of the

page to complete the following tasks: DNA Fingerprinting, DNA Karyotypes: Patient History
Analysis, Engineering a Crop: Transgenic Manipulation, and Cloning Mimi

Good Websites to use:

Recombinant DNA
PBS site on Transgenic crops: also has a good link on gene therapy:

Good Description of recombinant DNA and the difference between genetic engineering and mutations: click on
EN (english), then What is Biotechnology? (at the top) and then Cut and Paste

Use this site to do 2 activities: Catch a Criminal and Maize Mutants. Maize Mutants will help you discuss the
difference between genetic engineering and traditional crop breeding.

Cloning

Human Genome Project
Under Introduction click View Animation-it will give you the story of the Human Genome Project.

This site has information about the human genome project. Look at top bar and explore what diseases have been
found on different chromosomes (remember there are 23 pairs of chromosomes)

Virtual Gel Electrophoresis
Do you remember what a gel electrophoresis is? It is a test that scientists perform which separates proteins by
size. That was how you determined that one of Ms. Lindsey's twins had sickle cell disease, and one had sickle
cell trait. After you finish the DNA technology questions, you can go to the following site and do a virtual gel
electrophoresis
