Software programs tell the computer what tasks to perform, with operating systems stored in ROM to run the computer itself and application programs managing user information like Microsoft Office. Operating systems are the software platform that runs all computer components and determines which applications can be used, with the main types being PC and Apple systems. The chapter encourages readers unfamiliar with PCs to review the material and practice in campus labs, as most companies and hospitals use PCs rather than Macs, making familiarity with PCs essential knowledge.
