From the Desk of Youth Ministry,
Although the exact number is uncertain, the Catholic
Church recognizes over 10,000 saints and beati (blessed).
The reason why its difficult to trace is that there was no formal canonization process until 993AD, when St. Ulrich of
Augsburg became the first official canonized Saint by Pope
John XV. The process has undergone several changes since
its inception to our modern day canonization process.
The second to last step in the canonization process is
named beatification. Its no coincidence that the Gospel
reading we hear today from Matthew, on the Solemnity of
All Saints day, are what weve come to know as the beatitudes. There seems to be a very strong correlation to the adjectives used in this Gospel and any of the recognized Saints
and beati. The most significant is one of the possible two
criteria for beatification is martyrdom:
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you
falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven.
There are thousands of saints or beati who were either
martyred or died in childhood or adolescence. To think,
hundreds of those who suffered persecution and often called
to intercede on earthly matters, were no older than 18.
The importance of teenagers and children in our faith is immeasurable.
This past Saturday, our High School Youth Ministry
students filled the liturgical roles at Mass at St. Anthony
Church. Those who were there could attest to the subtle differences in the Mass, whether it was the trumpet playing
Amazing Grace, the youthful and varying voices singing
the responsorial psalm, prayers of the faithful being read by
one of our high school seniors, serving at the altar of God, or
just the overall prayers and presence of our high school
students in the Church.
My fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, God calls all his
children to himself in their own way. Id like to take a moment to recognize, on the Solemnity of All Saints day, those
children and adolescents, who were called to serve God
through their beatification and canonization. In addition, Id
like for us to think about how important Gods calling is for
our children and teenagers. Although they may not all be
canonized, the Youth Mass this past Saturday, reminded us to
be inspired by their faith.
Peace,
Tom Perdian

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE A gr eat
prayer by Blessed John Henry Newman reminds us: God
has created me for some definite service. He has committed
some work to me which he has not committed to another. I
have my mission. That means that you have a contribution
to make to the work of Christ in our world. And our first job
in On Mission for The Church Alive! is to renew the
Church so that it inspires people to follow Jesus. Think about
what your first step could be to accomplish that mission.
Then do it. To read more, check out On Mission for The
Church Alive! on page 5 of this weeks Pittsburgh Catholic
and visit www.OnMissionChurchAlive.org.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church - Jesus makes
charity the new commandment. By loving his own to the
end, he makes manifest the Fathers love which he receives.
By loving one another, the disciples imitate the love of Jesus
which they themselves receive. Whence Jesus says: As the
Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.
And again: This is my commandment, that you love one
another as I have loved you. (CCC, 1823)
