Lesson Title: Cardinal Directions (pg. 230)

Learning Objective
After creating the compass, students will be able to write five bullet points in the KWL
chart Learn section with 100% accuracy.

What are they used for?
Do you know any directions?

New Information
The four cardinal directions or cardinal points are the directions of North, East, South,
and West, and the initials are: N, E, S, W.
Heres an easy acronym to remember, Never Eat Soggy Waffles!
Directions are used for finding places on maps or can be used for you to help other
people by giving them directions to find places.
(during this section we will learn the song North South East West- Hi-5 and sing/dance
to it)
Application
Students will watch the video and construct their own compass with a partner, and
provided guidance and support from the classroom teacher. Materials will provided to
students.

Next, students will use sticky notes to label the directions on the table, around the bowl
and partner talk with their buddy about the creation of the compass and the cardinal
directions.
Generalize/Wrap-Up
Students will complete the section of the KWL chart L. After completing, a class
discussion will he held to see if there are any unanswered questions and to review the
Cardinal Directions/Compass Activity.

Accommodations for All Learners:


ELL: Partner/buddy pairing (middle level student) and classroom discussions
Gifted: Provide different materials to create the compass and an addition to the cardinal
directions, provide the intermediate directions as well to learn.
Lower Level: Partner/buddy pairing (middle level student) and classroom discussions
