Daro stared at the big red circle on the calendar. His little brother
Ariel would be five years old next Thursday. Would they eat pizza and
play video games? Would Ariel choose a big piata?
Two years ago Daro had the best party at Fabulous Fiestas. All of
Daros kindergarten friends came. The outdoor play area was crazy
crowded. Daro got so many presents, he couldnt even remember
them. Wouldnt Ariel love a birthday like that?

Ariel was playing with small boats on the carpet. Daro sat down
beside him and said, So, what do you want to do for your birthday?
I want to eat bean and cheese tacos, Ariel said.
Is that all? Daro couldnt believe it. Arent we going to Fabulous
Fiestas? Dont you want to play video games? Dont you want pizza?
I want bean and cheese tacos, Ariel said.
But, Ariel, dont you want to go somewhere special on your
birthday?

Ariel jugaba con barquitos en la alfombra. Daro se sent a su lado y

dijo Y, qu vas a querer hacer para tu cumpleaos?
Quiero comer tacos de frijoles con queso dijo Ariel.
Eso es todo? Daro no lo poda creer. No vamos a ir a
Fabulous Fiestas? No quieres jugar videojuegos? No quieres comer
pizza?
Quiero tacos de frijoles con queso dijo Ariel.
Pero, Ariel, no quieres ir a un lugar especial para tu cumpleaos?

Sure. I want to go to the park. Ariel gathered all his boats

together. We can eat bean and cheese tacos at the park.
What about a big cake? Daro caught one boat as it slipped
through Ariels fingers. If you dont have a cake with five candles,
what will you blow out?

Claro. Quiero ir al parque. Ariel junt todos sus barquitos.

Podemos comer tacos de frijoles con queso en el parque.
Y qu tal un pastel grande? Daro atrap un barquito que se le
desliz de los dedos a Ariel. Si no tienes un pastel con cinco velas,

qu vas a soplar?

Bubbles! Ariel took the boat from Daro. Ill blow bubbles at the
park. He skipped towards the kitchen. Ill tell Mom right now.
Bean and cheese tacos? Bubbles? The park? Daro thought Ariel
would have the worst birthday ever!

Burbujas! Ariel tom el barquito de las manos de Daro. Voy a

soplar burbujas en el parque. Se fue dando saltitos a la cocina. Le
voy a decir a Mam ahorita.
Tacos de frijoles con queso? Burbujas? El parque? Daro pens que
Ariel tendra el peor cumpleaos de su vida!

On his birthday, Ariel wore the kindergarten

crown at lunch time in the cafeteria. Daros
second-grade friends laughed and pointed at Ariel.
Daro sighed. Ariel would be so sorry he only
wanted bean and cheese tacos and bubbles.

En su cumpleaos, Ariel se puso la corona del knder durante el

almuerzo en la cafetera. Los amigos de segundo ao de Daro se
rieron y sealaron a Ariel.
Daro suspir. Ariel se arrepentira de slo haber pedido tacos de
frijoles con queso y burbujas.

After school, Daro walked over to Ariels classroom. Usually they

walked together to the daycare van for the after school program.
But today his mom stood beside Ariel waiting for Daro.
Hey Mom, what are you doing here? Daro asked.
We came to pick you up for Ariels bean and cheese taco birthday,
Mom said. Your dads waiting in the car. Lets go to the park.
Daro grinned at his little brother. Im starting to like your birthday.

Despus de la escuela, Daro camin al saln de Ariel.

Usualmente caminaban juntos a la van de la guardera para
ir al programa de despus de escuela.
Hoy su mam estaba al lado de Ariel esperando a Daro.
Hola Mam, qu ests haciendo aqu? pregunt
Daro.
Vinimos por ustedes para celebrar el cumpleaos de
Ariel con tacos de frijoles con queso dijo Mam. T
pap est esperando en el carro. Vmonos al parque.
Daro le sonri a su hermanito. Ya me est gustando
tu cumpleaos.

Inside the car, Dad gave Ariel a birthday present. It was a long red
boat.
The boat has a remote control, Ariel, Dad said. You can sail the
boat all over the pond.
What a cool present! Daro said. If he got a boat like Ariels, hed
always remember it.

Dentro del carro, Pap le dio un regalo de cumpleaos a Ariel. Era un

bote rojo y largo.
El bote tiene control remoto, Ariel dijo Pap. Puedes navegarlo
por toda la laguna.
Qu regalo ms suave! dijo Daro. Si a l le regalaran un bote
como el de Ariel, siempre lo recordara.

The city park had few visitors. Daro and Ariel had the best
playground all to themselves. They climbed the slide and played on
the swings until Mom called, Lets eat our tacos before they get
cold.
Ariel ate two bean and cheese tacos. Delicious!
Its all good! Daro exclaimed and reached for another taco.

El parque tena pocos visitantes. Daro y Ariel tenan los

mejores juegos slo para ellos. Se subieron al tobogn y jugaron
en los columpios hasta que Mam los llam Vamos a comer los
tacos antes de que se enfren.
Ariel se comi dos tacos de frijoles con queso. Delicioso!
Todo est rico! exclam Daro y sac otro taco.

Mom gave out four bubble bottles. Mom and Dad blew bubbles with
each other. Daros bubbles popped over a turtles head peeking out of
the water. Ariel blew and blew. Bubbles floated all around him.

Mam les dio cuatro botellas de burbujas. Mam y Pap hicieron

burbujas juntos. Las burbujas de Daro se reventaron sobre la cabeza de
una tortuga que se asom del agua. Ariel hizo muchas burbujas. Las

As they sang Happy Birthday, Park Ranger Salinas walked up to

their picnic table. Whos having a birthday?
Today my brother Ariel is five years old, Daro told him.
Ariel nodded. Yes, heres my new boat to sail on the pond.
Ariel, Ranger Salinas said. For your birthday, would you like a ride
in my ranger car?
I want my mom to come, Ariel replied, and my brother too!
Daro couldnt believe it! A ride in the ranger car on Ariels birthday!

Cuando estaban cantando Las maanitas, el Guardabosques Salinas

se acerc a su mesa. Quin est cumpliendo aos?
Hoy mi hermano Ariel cumple cinco aos le dijo Daro.
Ariel asinti. S, aqu est mi bote nuevo para navegarlo en la
laguna.
Ariel dijo el Guardabosques Salinas. Por tu cumpleaos,
quieres pasear en el carro del guardabosques?
Quiero que nos acompae mi mam contest Ariel, y mi
hermano tambin!
Daro no lo poda creer! Un paseo en el carro del guardabosques en
el cumpleaos de Ariel!

Before he started the car, Ranger Salinas turned to the back seat.
Here, Ariel, you can wear a ranger hat.
Daro laughed when the hat covered Ariels face. Ariel
pushed it up and laughed too. They waved at two
old men playing checkers.

Antes de hacer andar el carro, el Guardabosques Salinas

volte hacia el asiento trasero. Toma, Ariel, te puedes poner
el sombrero de guardabosques.
Daro se rio cuando el sombrero le cubri la cara a Ariel.
Ariel lo empuj hacia arriba y tambin se rio. Ambos saludaron
a dos seores que estaban jugando a las damas.

After the ride, Ranger Salinas showed them the life jacket, a
first-aid box and the extra radios he kept in the car.
Ranger Salinas let Ariel hold one radio. He told Daro to run
over to the trees with the other.

Despus del paseo, el Guardabosques Salinas les mostr el

chaleco salvavidas, el botiqun de primeros auxilios y los radios
extras que guardaba en el carro.
El Guardabosques Salinas dej que Ariel tomara un radio. Le dijo
a Daro que corriera hacia los rboles con el otro.

Daro pressed the button and said, Ariel, your bean

and cheese taco birthday is too much fun!
Ariels happy voice crackled over the radio. Come
on, Daro, lets go sail my boat.

Ariel stood at the edge of the pond with the remote control.
Everyone cheered as the boat sailed around the pond. Ariels birthday
smile glowed across his face. Then he turned and passed the control to
Daro.
Daro felt like it had been his birthday too. He would never forget it.
Ariel, Daro said. Next year, I want a bean and cheese taco
birthday too.

Ariel se par a la orilla del lago con el control remoto. Todos

festejaron mientras el bote navegaba en el lago. La sonrisa de
cumpleaos de Ariel brill en su cara. Luego se dio vuelta y le entreg el
control a Daro.

Diane Gonzales Bertrand grew up in a family with five

brothers. They enjoyed eating their moms bean and
cheese tacos and celebrating their birthdays together
at city parks. She is the author of several picture books,
including Cecilia and Miguel Are Best Friends / Cecilia y
Miguel son mejores amigos and Sofia and the Purple
Dress / Sofia y el vestido morado. Diane lives with her
husband Nick in San Antonio, Texas. She teaches at St.
Marys University, where she is Writer-in-Residence.

Diane Gonzales Bertrand creci en una familia con cinco hermanos. A ellos les
gustaba comer tacos de frijoles con queso que les preparaba su mam y celebrar
los cumpleaos juntos en los parques de la ciudad. Es autora de varios libros

An only child, Robert Trujillo always wanted to share

tacos with a little brother. Thankfully he was blessed
with lots of cousins and a green BMX bike to fly away
on. His love for picture books was inspired by his son,
who loves to read and draw comics. Robert is the
author and illustrator of Furqans First Flat Top. He
was born and raised in Oakland, California.
Como hijo nico, Robert Trujillo siempre quiso
compartir tacos con un hermanito. Afortunadamente fue bendecido con muchos
primos y una bici BMX verde con la que poda volar. Su amor por los libros infantiles
fue inspirado por su hijo, a quien le encanta leer y dibujar comics. Robert es autor e
