Abstract
Doyouthinkthatwewilleverbeabletofreetheairofharmfulgasesandstop
respiratoryproblems?Thisiswhyourexploravisionideaistocreatearevolutionarymachine
(calledtheHumidifier2030)thatwillchangeourairconditions.Weplantodothisbytakingin
airthathascarbondioxideinitandothergreenhousegases,andusinganotyetdiscovered
chemical,wewillseparatethesegasesfromtheairandthiswillbreakthebondbetweenthe
twosubstancesinthecertaingas.Ourideacouldbesousefultofuturegenerations,especially
withcarsstillrunningcausingmorepollution.Theairwillkeepgettingmorepollutedunlesswe
findamachine,likeourExploravisionproject,tostopit.

PresentTechnology
Thepresenttechnologyideathatrelatestoourexploravisionideaisthe
humidifier.Humidifiersareusedtoridtheairofdustparticles,tohelpwithasthma
conditionsandstopstuffyair.Butforsomepeoplehumidifiersjustarentusefulifthe
buyerdoesnothaveasthma,orstuffyair.Recentlytherehasbeennewnewsstorieson
provinghowwellapurifierworks,andtheresultshavenotbeengood.Sothatmeans
thatforfuturedesignsforregularairpurifierswillprobablynotbeneeded.Butouridea
willbeneededforthefuture,studiescanprovethat.Thethingthatpresenttechnology
islackingisahumidifierthatstopsgreenhousegasesandhelpsasthmaproblemstoo.
Thatiswhyweneedthisbrilliantideainthefuture.


History
Airpurifiersbeganasfarbackasthe16thcentury.Theoriginalwasdesignedby
LeonardoDaVinci.Itwasamaskthatwentoverasailorsmouthandnosetoprevent
breathinginharmfulchemicalsproducedbyweapons.AlexanderVonHumboldttook
DaVincisideaastepfurtherbymakingthedevice.Thepurifierwasawaterdipped
cloth,thatwentoveraminersmouthandnosetoprotectthemfromharmfulgases
foundunderground.But,airfiltersonlybegantobecomeusefulinthe1900s.Inthe
1940stheU.S.AirForcecreatedapurifierthatprotectedpeopleagainstradioactive
chemicals.In1963aGermanmechanicalengineerdesignedafilterthatwasmeantto
trapdustparticlesfromtherestoftheair.Itwasmadeofafilterpad,magnet,anda
furnace.Today,airpurifiersareusedinhomestohelpfilterdustparticlesfromtheairto
helpfightagainstallergiesandasthma.Nowpeopleareworkingtodevelopeven
strongerpurifierstofilterharmfulgasesfromtheatmosphere,likeus.

FutureTechnology
OurideafortheHumidifier2030:

Themainreasonthatourmachinecan'tworkisbecausewedon'thaveasafe
chemicaltobreakthebondbetweenthegreenhousegases.Itmaytakelittle
chemicals,butitishard.Butwebelievethatthisfuturetypeofchemical,shouldalsobe
abletoseparatethebondbetweenallgreenhousegases,suchas:Nitrogen,Methane,
CarbonMonoxide,SulfurHexafluorideEtc.Takingcarbondioxideandseparatingitfrom
airisaveryhardprocessandcanbedonewithveryfewchemicals.Unfortunately,
chemicalsaretrickythingstodealwithhardtofindoutwhichchemicalsaredoingwhat
wewantthemtodo.Withthescienceworldadvancingquicklyourpredictionisthatthis
newsafechemicaliswithinreachinaaboutoneorsodecades.Ourhopeforthefuture
isthatachemicallikethatiscreated.Alsoweneedtofindsomesortofwaytocontain
theairallatonce.Weneedsomethingbigtocontaintheairsowecanpurifytheairin
bigportions.


Breakthroughs
Thereasonwhyourdesignisnotabletohappentodayisbecauseofthe
chemicalsourdesigntakestowork.Wehavelearnedaboutmanychemicals(calcium
oxide,orburntlimestone,sodalime,sodiumhydroxide,potassiumhydroxide,lithium
hydroxide)butallofthemhavesometypeofeffectthatisdangertobeinhaledortobe
touchedwith.Wethinkpossiblyawayourdesigncanworkinthefutureisbyhavinga
typeofchemicalthatisattractedtogreenhousegases.Thisproblemischallenging
becausechemicalsareahardmaterialtodealwith.Also,wethinkthatthefuture
technologyinscienceisadvancingsothenmakingachemicalthatisattractedto
carbonwillbeinreachinaboutlessthan15years.
Eventhoughourdesignisdependingononetypeofchemical,todaywestill
havefiltersthatcanfilteroutdirtandsmog.Weplantodothisbyusingafilterthatis
practicallyidenticaltoawaterfilterjustsmallersoitcanfilteroutbaddirtparticlesand
otherthingsthatarecausingrespiratoryproblems.Awaywecanfulfillthisinthefuture
isbyinventingamachinethatcancompactairandthatwouldbecompressingdown
badparticles.Wewillhavetomakemanyteststofigureoutthesethings,andeven
moretestssowecanfigureoutcertainthingslike:howlongdirtcanstickontomoving
air.Thesetestswillbeimportantbecauseitisessentialthatweareabletodetermine
thethingswefeelarepossibleinfuturetimes.

DesignProcess

Wheninthecreatingofourproject,wehadmanyideasandchangestothefinal


product.Welikedandkeptsomeideasandthrewothersaway.Thereweresome

interestingthingswebroughtup.

Ahandfulofourideas:
Wethoughtofmakingsomekindofcontraptiontomaketheairbetterand
easiertobreatheinandthatwouldpurifytheairinordertohelppurify
someofthegreenhousegasesintheairandhelpreduceit.
Wethoughtofsomewaytotrapthegasesinsometypeofcontainer.
Tohelpgetridofgreenhousegasesintheairandletoutclean,purified
air.
Thestructureofourmachinewasputthroughmanydifferentthoughts.We
thoughtaboutithavingasuctionthatwassqueezedtotakeinairbutin
thedecidedtogowithamachinethatdiditforususingsuctionthrougha
pipe.
Intheendwehadtothinkaboutthebigprobleminthecurrentworld,
greenhousegases.Weknewwehadtomakeupsometypeofplantostopthis
environmentalnightmare!Sowemixedtogethersomeofourideasandmadethe
humidifier2030!Wefirststartedoutwithofcoursebrainstorming,welearnedabout
whatwasbestaboutourideaandfindoutwhatwehopedthefuturewouldfix.Thenwe
didalotofresearchongreenhousegasesandhumidifiersandwhatwecandotostop
greenhousegasesnow!Thenweresearchedmoreandmoreuntilwemadeourfinal
sketchandwasfinished!

Consequences

Therearesomanygoodthingsaboutouridea,however,thereisonenegative
sincethereareonlycertainwaystoseparatethegreenhousegasesoutofthe
atmosphere.Oneofthewaysisbreakingthebondbetweensaycarbonandoxygen
whichcreatesthegreenhousegasofcarbondioxide.Wearehopingthatthisfuture
substancewillbeabletobreakthebondbetweenothergreenhousegasessuchas:
Methane,Watervapor,Nitrousoxide,troposphericozone,Chlorofluorocarbon,and
CarbonMonoxide.Wethinkthatthesechemicalslikethecarbondioxidecould
potentiallybreakthebondbetweenthetwosubstancesthatgointothegas.Rightnow
weknowthatisabigproblemthatweface.Wehavelookedintosomechemicalslike
limeoxide/burntlimestonetobreakapartthegas.Butevenlookingintosomeof
chemicals,lotsofthemaredoingwhathemtodo,whichisbreakingupthegasesitis
justamatterofsafety.Allofthechemicalshavemildsafetyissues.Sowebasically
alreadyhavethechemicalmadeforus.Pluswiththescienceworldgrowing,itshould
onlybeashortamountofyearsbeforeasafeversionofourchemicalisbuilt.Butour
inventioncanhelpcleartheairofcarbondioxideandgreenhousegases.Itdeconstructs
carbondioxideintojustcarbonandoxygen.
