SO Report Week 3
Overview:
On October 7th, Brydie Pye taught a physical education lesson to a group of 20 second
graders. The focus of the lesson was catching and throwing, while their previously learned
skills were skipping, galloping, hopping, underhand throwing, catching and team work. The
students did the lesson on the blacktop in a half shaded, half sunny area where there was an
already drawn square so that the students had boundary lines for the activity. For this lesson
Brydie used 20 hula hoops and 20 bean bags.
Systematic Observation 1:
The first systematic observation that I had to complete was the teacher feedback/
questioning which tracks the type of feedback brydie is giving to the students and whether it
is towards a group of students, the whole class, or an individual. Throughout this lesson
brydie had the students engage in sharks and minnows and tossing bean bags into the air and
catching them. Some of the feedback that was given to the students throughout the lesson was
brydie asking the students if they understood the activity they were supposed to perform after
she finished giving instructions. A lot of the feedback that was given to individual students
was her telling them that they were doing a good job, or Brydie giving little corrections to the
students like telling them to throw the bean bag higher. At the end of the lesson she had the
students sit back on the white line and she asked them to repeat the cues for throwing the bean
bag up and catching it to make sure that they fully understood the purpose of todays activity.
Systematic Observation 2:
The second systematic observation that I completed was the System for Observing
Fitness Instruction (SOFIT), which tracks the movement of three students during the lesson to
see if they participate in moderate to vigorous activity during the period of the lesson. The
lesson lasted for 25 minutes for which only 10 minutes and 10 seconds consisted of students
engaging in MVPA. After looking at the data this lesson lasted for 25 minutes for which only
8 minutes and 40 seconds consisted of students engaging in MVPA. Most of the MVPA was
done during the middle of the lesson, when most of the students were actually focused and
engaged in the activity they were supposed to be doing. Byrdie did not quite meet the wanted
requirement of 50% of MVPA during the lesson. A lot of the time was spent on class
management and trying to get the students to focus on the task at hand. In the next lesson I
would encourage brydie not to give the students second or third chances, but make them sit
out the first time they do not listen so that they know they cannot act a certain way in the
future. I would also encourage brydie to do more challenging activities because even though
they are second graders most of them seem to be very athletic for their age.
