more than a physical or emotional fight or conflict

every day? Does your vision of work embrace more
than a commodity-based vision (.e.g., product only)?
Does your work also embrace a meaning-based vision (e.g., that working also allow you to invest in
developing yourself as a person?)
2.
The internal phone directory instructs
colleagues on how to send secret feedback to one
anothers bosses. Questions: Can you work in an
environment not knowing when Big Brother will rat
on you? Are you aware, as Lily Tomlin has said: that
if you want to get into the rat race, keep in mind
that at the end of the day, youre still going to be a
rat? Is this a vision of being the best as the article
would want you to be?
3.
Amazon has designed what many workers
call an intricate machine propelling them to achieve
Mr. Bezos ever-expanding ambitions. Questions:
Would you enjoy seeing yourself as part of an intricate machine? And, a machine that is a vision made
up by your boss? Is your life your work life simply
to be a cog in such a machine?
4.
One employee has remarked, You walk out
of a conference room and youll see a grown man
covering his face. Nearly every person I worked with,
I saw cry at their desk. Ques-ions: Could you see
yourself reacting in a similar manner? Are money
and personal dignity worth that reality? Can your
personal values be stretched that way?
5.
We learn that with Amazon, Secrecy is
required; even low-level employees sign a lengthy
confidentiality agreement. Questions: Would you
be asking questions about such a confidentiality
agreement if you were to join the company? Do you
remain secret about bullies in the office? How do
you feel if you know in your heart that you must be
a whistleblower based on your observations of lack
of ethics?
6.
Many former and current employees described how they tried to reconcile the sometimespunishing aspects of their workplace with what
many called its thrilling power to create. Questions:
49

Can you balance the inner tension of hyper-competition and the thrilling power to create? Is power
worth all that to you? Where do you draw the line?
7.
Bezos believes that harmony is often overvalued in the workplace. Questions: Do you buy into
that statement? To what extent do you buy into that
statement? How would you explain another viewpoint?
8.
Stephenie Landry, an operations executive, A
customer [in New York] was able to get an Elsa doll
that they could not find in all of New York City, and
they had it delivered to their house in 23 minutes.
Questions: Does Landrys comment make sense to
you? If so, why? If not, why not? What does Landrys
statement imply about who we are as people not
just customers today? If there is an alternative,
what could it be?
9.
If youre a good Amazonian, you become
an Amabot, said one employee, using a term that
means you have become at one with the system.
Questions: How would you feel about becoming one
with the system? What image does becoming one
with the system bring to mind for you? Whats the
alternative if any if paying the bills is important?
10.
In interviews, 40-year-old men were convinced Amazon would replace them with 30-yearolds who could put in more hours, and 30-yearolds were sure that the company preferred to hire
20-somethings who would outwork them. Questions: Would you work for a company like Amazon?
Why? Why not?

Final Questions:
Are you a struggler or a snuggler? Can you be both?

THE SNUGGLE ECONOMY:

Thoughts to Ponder Working More Holistically

Michael Rock, Ed.D.

October 2015

We have all heard about the struggle for survival

metaphor. Perhaps we have used it personally. That
is, we may have said to someone, Life right now is
simply a struggle for survival, meaning that in the
competitive rat race you may experience as living
or working, youre barely keeping your head above
water. Its a daily grind, so to speak. We just have to
see a picture or read a story of someone else whose
struggle is imaginably worse than ours could ever
be for example, that little boy refugee, 3 years-old,
washed up and lying dead face-down on the beach!
It was a most horrifying image for any of us to see.
The refugee crisis surely is a struggle to simply exist.
What it seems is that we have two dynamics at play:
snuggle and struggle. I will explain each of these
words shortly, but let us look at the Figure 1 below.

While most of us can identify with an image like

the Snuggle-Struggle line, many of us believe we
are doomed to repeat it endlessly by sliding up and
down from one end of the scale to the other just like

Sisyphus (SIS-i-fus) in Greek mythology who rolled a

rock up the mountain as his punishment only to see
it roll back down; the process then became endless:
up and down, down and up, up and down, etc.
Harvard Professor Martin Nowak, writing in the
current issue of Scientific American suggests that life
is not just a struggle for survival, it is also a snuggle
for survival. In fact evolution has always depended
on more snuggle than bare-toothed struggle and
aggression. 2 Many can identify with Sisyphus when
it comes to their workplaces. These employees or
managers feel and believe that no matter how much
they do, they will never get caught up or appreciated. Research has demonstrated that in the long run,
reciprocity is always the winner. Cooperation is built
into our DNA. I realize that the competitive spirit is
also part of our make-up but somewhere as adults
we must learn when and how to balance and choose
these tendencies in us.
It seems business as we have seen in other articles since the dawn of the Industrial Age and the
loss of soul to Cartesian binary thinking has totally
sold out to competition without a balancing movement with cooperation. The story of Amazon seems
to have many of these Sisyphian elements where the
hyper-serious competitive spirit exists all by itself
among executives and managers.
Lets look at one example. Owner and CEO Jeff Bezos
has his 'hyper-formula' or model of business for
'success.' Amazon is incredibly successful by today's
business standard: product and money. But from a
human, and therefore, ethical perspective, should
employees 'work' in such an environment? In an
article in August 2015 in The New York Times the
subtitle to the articles gives us all we need: The
company is conducting an experiment in how far it
can push white-collar workers to get them to achieve
its ever-expanding ambitions. And push it does!
Lets list a few points from the article:
1.
The workplace is a bruising place to work
in. Questions: Is that your type of workspace where
you thrive the most? Or does work mean something
