Sarsaparilla, Wild

Aralia nudicaulis
Family: Araliaceae
Woodland herbaceous perennial. The creeping rhizome makes a sweet, balsamic tea
that has marked alterative properties. Substitute for Smilax. Cultivation: Sow seed in
fall, midwinter or early spring for germination in the spring. Plant prefers open
woodlands or shade garden and plenty of moisture. Flowers greenish-white to 2 feet
tall. Space plants at least 2 feet apart.
