Purpose
This procedure provides guidelines for the removal of grating to safeguard the employees from
falling into the hole created by the removal of the grating.

Scope
This procedure covers the temporary / permanent removal of all types of grating from the
ground and floor like sewage hole covers and grating from structure in sites.

Definitions & Abbreviations

4.1

Definition
Open Hole
Any opening having 225 Cm2 in which a foot can pass through is considered as Open Hole.

Responsibility
HDEC Supervision is responsible to ensure that the removal of gratings are controlled and
properly managed to eliminate the fall hazards that exist.
All employees involved in this type of work or working near an open hole must be trained in
hazards and dangers associated with fall protection and elevated work.
HDEC Supervision shall ensure all open holes are properly barricaded or covered and that
signs and lights have been installed. Temporary cover if used for closing shall be constructed
of material (wood or steel) sufficient to withstand a load of 300 Kg and be properly secured.
The employees who are going to work shall be equipped with approved fall protection proper
anchorage shall be ensured for securing the fall protection.
HDEC Supervision shall designate a person to perform hole watch duties at each work
location where an open hole is being created or grating being removed, at all times while
employees are working from the start of removing the grating until the grating has been
replaced. HDEC Supervisor responsible for the work and a safety representative shall inspect
the work area before the start of the work.

Requirement
All grating removal work shall only be allowed on an approved Permit attached to a Safe Work
Plan. HDEC Supervision shall attach a copy of an area plot plan to the permit clearly indicating
the exact location where the grating has to be removed or open hole needs to be created.
On completion of the work, HDEC Supervision and safety shall inspect the work area to
ensure the grating has been properly replaced and secured and that the area is completely
safe. If satisfactory, sign the permit off and retain a copy of the permit on record at HDEC
safety department.
All documentation will be made available to Client upon request.
