Engagement/Focus:
Greeting: Good morning class!

Engagement: Show the students the cover of Old Hat New Hat and ask them, Who can tell me what is in the bears hand?
After an answer is given, proceed to the next step of linking to the previous lecture.
Link to Previous Knowledge: Who can tell me what we learned about yesterday? Now lets review what we know about
nouns: Who can tell me what a noun is? What is an example of a person that you would find in a school? [teacher, student,
coach] what is an example of a place that you would find in a school? [restroom, cafeteria, library] What is an example of a
thing or object that you would find at a school? [pencil, chair, markers] Great job class! Now that we have reviewed what a
noun is, today we will learn about adjectives, which is something that we use to describe a noun (person, place, thing).
Expected behavior: Before we begin our lesson on adjectives, I want to remind you that you may call out your answers when
a question is asked UNLESS my hand is raised, then you must also raise your hand.
Outcome: By the end of the day, each of you will be able to identify adjectives of color and size, and use these adjectives to
describe a noun.

Explanation/Procedures:
1. Direct attention to poster paper with the small and big circles on it. (Reading Street)
Adjectives are describing words. They tell you more about sizes, colors, shapes, or even numbers of nouns.
Point to circle on the left, What is something that you notice about this circle? [its small]

Point to image on the right, What is something that you can tell me about this circle? [its big]
Small and big are adjectives of sizes.
2. Point to the green and red circles on the circle poster paper.
Point to circle on the left, Who can tell me something about this circle? [its green]
Point to circle on the right What about this circle? [its red]
Green and red are adjectives of colors.
3. Direct attention to poster paper with image of SpongeBob
Without saying the name out loud, think about who is in the picture
Now, tell me about this person without saying their name
Write students answers around the image [short, yellow, squishy]
These words that you used are each called descriptive words because they are describing our noun, which is SpongeBob. In
this class, we will call descriptive words Adjectives.
4. Go back to showing cover of Old Hat New Hat (on Ipad)
Now that you have an idea of what adjectives are, lets look back at the cover of Old Hat New Hat.
Before when I asked you what was in the bears hands, you all answered simply saying a hat. This time, look at the picture
and see if you can think of adjectives to describe the hats. For example, I would look at the picture and say, This hat is
brown. Now, what are some other words to describe each hat?
After the students answer [one brown hat and one green hat], write the answers on the poster paper
Now we are going to locate the noun in the sentence by underlining the word that refers to a person, place or thing. How
can tell me which word is the noun that I need to underline in this sentence?
After we have located the noun, we are going to find the adjective that is describing our noun that we underlined by circling
the adjective. Who can tell me which word is the adjective in this sentence that I need to circle?
5. Pass out assessment and work through example problem
I am going to be passing out a worksheet and crayons to each of you and once they have been passed out, do not touch the
materials until I instruct you to do so. We will work an example problem together and then you will complete the rest of the
worksheet on your own.
Pass out work sheet and crayons
Tell the student turn to the example problem on the first page
Work the example problem with the students, leaving it up incase they need to look back at it to see which adjective goes in
each blank.

Read the directions aloud

lets look at the example problem. Who can tell me what animal this is? [Gorilla]
Now we will look at the word bank at the bottom of the work sheet in order to answer the statements.
Who can tell me which of the adjectives in the word bank is a color, and which of the adjectives is a size?
Now that we know which is which, we will place the correct color adjective to the animal it describes by coloring in the
animal with the correct color in the word bank. Then we will look at the sentence under each animal and match the shape/size
adjectives in the word bank that describe the correct animal.

Extension/Elaboration:
Extension:
For students who need a greater challenge, give them the image on page 25 of Old Hat New Hat and tell them to Circle 2 of the
hats in the image and describe the two you circled using 3 different adjectives.
Elaboration:
Give students the image of the Nike tennis shoes. Pretend that you forgot to pack your tennis shoes in your bag for your sleepover,
so you call your mom to ask her if she can bring them over to your friends house so that you can wear them to the park. However,
when she walks in to your closet, she sees two pairs of tennis shoes. How will your mom know which ones you want her to bring?
What adjectives can you use to describe to your mom which tennis shoes you want to wear so that she brings you the right ones?
You would ask her what color shoes she wants you to wear. The color of the shoe shows tells you which pair your mom wants you to
wear. This makes the color an adjective because it is describing the shoes that you need to wear.
Look at the image of the Nike shoes in a closet and use an adjective to describe the color of the shoes.
Closure:
1. Review: What is an adjective? remember that an adjective can be a color, size, shape, or anything else that might describe a
noun. Give me an example of an adjective that describes you.
2. Anticipation: Tomorrow, we are going to take a big breath and..explore and describe the depths of the sea.
3. Praise: You all did a great job of playing detective and searching for adjectives in sentences and pictures, and also coming up
with your own!
Assessment:
The students completed the Describe These Zoo Animals worksheet, correctly matching 6 of the 8 word bank words to their

animals.
