2-PS1-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable
properties.
2-PS1-2. Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are
best suited for an intended purpose.*
Objectives:
DOK L1: Students will be able to identify a change of matter.
DOK L2: Students will be able to describe how folding, tearing, cutting, and breaking change the properties of matter.
Essential Question(s):
How can matter change?
Materials Required:
Construction paper, scissors, molding clay, crackers, aluminum foil, a piece of bread, worksheets, pencils, aprons, napkins.
Vocabulary:
Cutting, folding, breaking, tearing, matter, change.
Summary of Lesson:
Changing the properties of matter.
Procedure:
Before: (approx. 15 minutes) Anticipatory Set
The teacher will introduce the lesson title.
The teacher will ask the students how they think matter can change. The students will think pair share and then
share out loud with the class. (Elaboration)
The students will look at the picture handout.
The teacher will have the children brainstorm answers to the question How were the foods changed to make the
palm tree and the sailboat? (Explanation)
The teacher will ask them to identify the foods used to form the pictures, and describe what was done to the foods
to shape it.

*Remind children that active readers make texts their own by marking them to writing notes to help
them understand what they are reading. Encourage children to use pencil to make annotations and to
feel free to change their marks and notes as they read. The goal of annotation is to help children
remember what they have read. (Engagement)
During: (approx. 30 minutes)

The students will turn to page 352.

The teacher will read the heading aloud.
The teacher will tell children that these two pages are about ways to change things.
The teacher will ask the students what do you do to a loaf of bread when you want a single slice?
The students will respond. (Explanation)
The teacher will ask what might you do to an egg before you cook it?
The students will respond. (Explanation)
The teacher will read the text out loud.
The teacher will read the Active Reading prompt.
The students will circle words that name actions that cause changes to properties of matter. (Engagement)
The teacher will ask students the following questions: (Elaboration)
How does an orange peel change when you tear it?
Which picture shows something breaking?
How is breaking the same as tearing? How is it different?
Look at the tortilla, how does folding change its properties?
The teacher will read the prompt.
The teacher will ask children to name a favorite food and describe ways to change it.
The teacher will list the ideas on the board.
The students can use this list or their own ideas to draw a way to change a food.

After: (approx. 5 minutes) Assessment:

The teacher will explain to the students that we will be conducting an experiment on changing matter.
The teacher will hand out aprons and napkins.
The teacher will hand each group an object that they can manipulate and make a change to.
The teacher will express the safety and importance of not eating the experiment material.
The teacher will demonstrate how to change matter by manipulating an object.
The teacher will explain different ways to change the matter.
The students will complete the activity. (Exploration)
The students will share ideas and what they did to change their matter. (Evaluation)
*E-Learning could be added by using a video that focuses on the changes we can make to matter.
