Course Description This course is designed to reconnect grade 9 students with basic mathematics skills that are essential to the common workplace. This course is focused around experiential learning activities that are intended to make meaningful connections between schooling and personal experiences. The K & E Math course aims to assist students in their transition from school to the workplace and community. Additionally, this course aims to provide students with the opportunity to exercise their interpersonal skills in a mathematical setting. Upon completion of this course, students will have many of the competencies necessary to make successful transitions into other courses or further education and training. General Learning Outcomes* Students will identify the problem, select, and apply appropriate problemsolving strategies, mathematical operations and tools. Students will estimate and calculate accurately. Students will develop teamwork skills and use appropriate vocabulary to reason and communicate mathematically Students will develop the skills to apply mathematical literacy to everyday situations. *[Calgary Board of Education, (2009), Knowledge And Employability Mathematics Program of Studies]
Assessment Student grades will be determined through a variety of
assessments including but not limited to projects, assignments, and tests. Marking will be done on the same 4, 3, 2, 1 scale as the rest of your courses. Learner Expectations In order to succeed in K&E Mathematics 9 students will be required to: Come to class on a consistent basis, and arrive on time. If you are late for any reason, please enter the room quietly and take your seat without disturbing others.
Arrive with materials required to succeed. This includes items such as
binders, pencils, highlighters, and textbooks. Additionally, students will be required to bring a scientific calculator to class. Cell phone calculators work well for in-class work, or quick referencing (with teacher permission). However, they will not be permitted during any exam or test. Participate during class time and remain on-task for the duration of the class. Take responsibility for your own learning. This includes listening to instructions, and asking questions when instructions are not understood. Nose Creek School takes great pride in creating a safe and positive atmosphere for all of its students. If any student is found to be disrupting the positive classroom environment (with poor behavior, comments, bullying, etc.), they will be dealt with immediately by the teacher and should expect a phone call home. If the problem persists, intervention by administration will ensue. Required Supplies (Student Provided) A three-ring binder/duo tang with dividers (or a dedicated section in an existing binder/duo tang) Blank paper and loose-leaf paper with three-ring holes Pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, scientific calculator, etc Protractor, compass, ruler, etc. (all can be found within a standard Mathematics geometry tool kit) Please return the course outline with the signed section below by Friday, September 11, 2015.
