Objectives

Plate Tectonics
Science
Grade 5
Students will be able to identify the
parts of the Earth as well as
understand what tectonic plates
are. The students will interactively
work with the teachers through a
Smartboard lesson. Afterwards, the
students will participate in an
interactive experiment. The
experiment will review what they
learned through creating an
explosive volcano.
Tectonics, Volcanoes, Oh my!
3.3.6.A.1: Recognize and interpret
various mapping representations of
Earths common features.
3.1.5.A9: Develop descriptions,
explanations, and models using
evidence and understand that these
emphasize evidence, have logically
consistent arguments, and are
based on scientific principles,
models, and theories.
Students will be able to label the
parts of the Earth. Students will be
able to show their knowledge by
answering questions from the
Smartboard. Students will be able
to explain phenomena in terms of

and a body of stone; sooner or later
I will explode. Sometimes Im
awake and sometimes Im asleep
and my body lies in the ocean deep.
What am I?
Teachers will ask students to solve
the riddle and figure out what our
topic of the day is.
During:
Teachers will introduce new
vocabulary through images and
activities on the Smartboard.
Teachers will pull up the

come up and place the correct
definition to the new vocabulary
words. Teachers will demonstrate
how tectonic plates make volcanoes
erupt and how they make
earthquakes occur. After the
teachers discuss how earthquakes
are caused, we will perform the
earthquake activity with the Legos.
The teachers will introduce the
experiment with the volcano
following the Smartboard lesson.
After:
The students will apply new
knowledge to conduct the
experiment. For the volcano
experiment, we will already have
the volcano set up. The student will
add baking soda, dish soap, vinegar,
and food coloring inside the
volcano, causing the volcano to
erupt. Following the experiment, we
will go back to the Smartboard and
review.
Students will come up to the
SmartBoard and answer questions.
They will slide to see the correct
answer. The students will explain
the layers while conducting the
experiment.
