NURSING 3020 Clinical Evaluation
1 Explain the experience of acute illness in individuals
On an orthopedics floor, patients generally have
receiving care in acute setting
more of a choice in their admission. For example,
many patients elect to have joint replacement
surgery and can request an early discharge is they
meet the necessary recovery requirements. An
acute illness entails that the illness has a rapid
onset, a short duration or both. Many patients
understand that once they leave the hospital, there
quality of life will improve and theyll leave feeling
better than before. Joint replacements are very
X
common in the aging population and most will
have more than one replacement in their lifetime;
some see it as inevitable part of aging. In an acute
setting, the focus is on the elimination of pain and
helping the patients return to their normal
functional abilities. Patients usually are well
informed on the recovery process as nurses explain
these elements thoroughly and they know what to
expect for the most part. My goal is to provide safe
and competent care and encourage my patients to
do everything they can on their own to encourage
the healing process, for example:
- encourage deep breathing and coughing/calf
pumping
- promote ambulation correlated with comfort
level and ability
- understand the need for pain medications to
maintain and reduce high levels of pain
2 Interpret critical aspects of the persons experience of acute It is essential in any area of nursing and especially
illness in relation to common signs and symptoms,
in an acute care setting that nurses remember that
responses to treatment, patterns of coping, and impact on
all patients will experience an illness differently.

feel no pain and are up walking on day 1.
