Data types?
Types of data

Needs to be geographically-referenced
information
Digital line graph (DLG)
-roads
-streams
-contour lines
-soils maps
Digital elevation model (DEM)
digital raster graphic (DRG)

scanned, rectified maps

-topographical map
-geological map
Digital orthophoto quadrangle (DOQ).

Aerial photo that has been geometrically corrected

Satellite images

Satellite image data analyzed to

indicate classes of land uses and cover.
Part of a census data file containing Part of a hydrologic data report
address information. indicating the discharge and amount
of river flow recorded by a particular
stream gauge that has a known location.

Tabular data

-sampling results
-species richness data
Data integration:
linking of information in different forms.

through a GIS.

Over laying
Benefits of GIS:

• Reduced time spent on map revisions and re-prints.

• Easier data management and protection against the
catastrophic loss of valuable maps.
• Easier & more complete analysis of spatial information.
• Improvement in the quality and timeliness of information
exchange.
• Improved ability to respond quickly to situations where
geographic information and specially formatted products
are needed.
• Centralized source of information.

In general, maps are easier to create, maintain, correct, and re-print in a computer
environment. Digital data can be stored, duplicated, and transferred far more efficiently
than paper records.
Limitations
• Only as good as the data collected
• May lead to over simplification
Potential Uses in Invasive
Management?
• Location of current infestations
• Track infestation changes over time
– Spread
– Density
– Etc.
• Correlate site characteristics to potential of
invasion
