LINE OF INQUIRY

Research on the effects constructivist classroom contextual factors have on student


motivation and learning strategy use. Investigations of innovative strategies, techniques,
and methods to facilitate learning environments that will ignite motivation and stimulate
learning strategy use in a manner that will positively transform students experience of
education within the classroom and enable students to then transfer that experience to
their life out in the real world.

Teams from each school (up to 15 students) compete in 23 different events
throughout the day.
Approximately 10 teams compete in each division; about 300 students
total.
All the events are science themed and the rules are established by the
national Science Olympiad organization.
Additional duties include:
o Coordinating approximately 15 faculty members to help
with writing/designing tests for various events.
o Coordinating approximately 100 student volunteers.

This was a collaborative effort among the University of Findlay, BGSU,
the University of Toledo, and NWO with the University of Findlay hosting
the event.
The goals of the conference were to:
o provide an opportunity for pre-service teachers to gather
with new and experienced in-service educators and
administrators to prepare for careers in the classroom,
o learn about relevant topics in education and local
educational resources available to them, and
o provide networking opportunities for students in the job
market as well as an opportunity to connect with their peers
and build a support network to increase retention.
o Attendance at this one-day event (Saturday) nearly doubled
from the previous year and received an overall of 4.06 out
of 5 evaluation rating from participants.

The Toledo Area Partnership in Education: Support Teachers as
Resources to Improve Elementary Science (TAPESTRIES) was a
collaborative partnership between the fourth largest urban school district
in Ohio - Toledo Public Schools (TPS), a suburban district Springfield
Local Schools (SLS), and the Colleges of Education and Arts and Sciences
at two universities - The University of Toledo (UT) and Bowling Green
State University (BGSU). Funded by the National Science Foundation
(NSF) it was designed to achieve a comprehensive, system-wide
transformation of K-6 science education and to improve science teaching
and learning through sustained professional development of all K-6
teachers.

Strategies Modeling and Reading Together Through Integrating Science (SMARTTIS).
SMARTTIS is a collaborative project between Adrian College (AC) and Adrian
Public School System (APS). The curriculum is Seeds of Science and Roots of
Reading (SSRR). This research is in collaboration with my colleague Dr. Vanessa
Morrison. Our research proposal has been approved through the Adrian College
Internal Review Board. The Adrian College Faculty Research Committee awarded
us a grant of $1,999.76 to support this research.
