Lesson 1 Continents

Continents, Countries & Cultures Unit

Grade / Age Level: K3 ESL Kindergartners age 5-6.


Subject Area: Geography / Learning English as a second language.
Time allotted for Lesson: One, 1 hour lesson.
Lesson Description: This lesson is intended to teach my students about the 7 Continents
in the world. They will learn the name and location of each continent as well as some new
English sentence structures to be able to talk about the Continents.

Curriculum Standards met: My privately owned Kindergarten does not follow any
curriculum standards. The goal of our lessons is to incorporate new English vocabulary,
sentence structures and phrases into each theme based lesson. We are currently developing
a more structured curriculum.

Instructional Objectives: After completing this Continents lesson, The students will be
able to:

Locate each Continent on a world map.

Explain what Continent they live in.

Count the Continents and understand that there are 7.

Recite the Continents song to help remember the Continent names.

Recognize the Continent shapes and sizes.

Instructional Procedures:
Lesson Introduction: I will introduce this lesson using a globe and a map of the
world. The students will all get a chance to point out where we live in the world. I
will then explain that the world is round like the globe and the map is the globe laid
out flat. I will then introduce the names of each Continent using flash cards and
having the students repeat the names.

Lesson Activities: During the lesson we will learn the Continents song and the
students will sing the song together and individually, we will sing it slow at first but
gradually sing it faster and faster. We will talk about the sizes of each Continent and
count how many there are. We will also play a game using the large laminated

Continent cards, I will place each Continent around the classroom as if the classroom
floor is a world map. I will tell the kids to go to each Continent, and the kids will all
gather and stand by the Continent.

Lesson Closure: At the end of the lesson I will give the students a color by word
worksheet to help them remember the location of each Continent. The students will
use color pencils and read the Continent names and what color to make each one.

Adaptations for Special Learners: This lesson was created for ESL students. Other
adaptations for special learners will be as follows. Special Learners will be allotted
additional time in completing the worksheet. A bilingual teacher assistant will also be
available to assist those who need additional help.

Supplemental Activities:

Extensions: An additional activity will be provided to those who want/need it in the


form of labeling and coloring a blank world map with the names of the 7 Continents.
Another option for extension is to have the students draw a map of the world and
label each Continent.

Remediation: Repeating the Continent song and additional games played with the
large laminated Continent cards will be used to help those student that need
additional confirmation.

Assessment / Evaluation: The evaluation process will be done informally. Monitoring


the students involvement in the activities will be done during the lesson. I will confirm that
the students can locate each Continent on a World map, as well as recite the Continent
song and verbally recite each Continents name. At the end of the lesson the students will
complete a worksheet and I will check each one individually and give verbal feedback on
their performance.

Learner Products: The students will have colored a World map color by word
worksheet. Those who complete the extension activity will have labeled the Continents on
a World map and or drawn and labeled a World map.
