Lesson 2 Countries

Continents, Countries & Cultures Unit

Grade / Age Level: K3 ESL Kindergartners age 5-6.


Subject Area: Geography / Learning English as a second language.
Time allotted for Lesson: One, 1 hour lesson.
Lesson Description: This lesson is intended to teach my students about 18 popular
Countries in the world. They will learn the name and location of each country as well as
some new English sentence structures to be able to talk about the Countries.

Curriculum Standards met: My privately owned Kindergarten does not follow any
curriculum standards. The goal of our lessons is to incorporate new English vocabulary,
sentence structures and phrases into each theme based lesson. We are currently developing
a more structured curriculum.

Instructional Objectives: After completing this Countries lesson, The students will be
able to:

Locate each Country on a world map.

Explain what Country they live in.

Identify what Continent each Country is in.

Recite the name of each Country when shown the Countries flag.

Instructional Procedures:
Lesson Introduction: I will introduce this lesson by first reviewing the Continents
and asking the students where we live. I will then explain that Japan is a Country
and each Continent has many Countries. We will have a brief discussion about other
Countries the students know. I will then introduce the names of each Country using
flash cards and having the students repeat the names.

Lesson Activities: During the lesson we will learn the names of each Country and
their flags. We will talk about the sizes of each Country and different shapes (eg.
Italy looks like a boot). We will play a Bingo game to help the students remember the
Country flags and Continent shapes. We will also play a game using the large
laminated Continent cards with Country flags on it, I will place each Continent
around the classroom as if the classroom floor is a world map. I will tell the kids to

find each Country, and the kids will all gather and stand by the Country.

Lesson Closure: At the end of the lesson I will give the students a writing worksheet
Where is the Country, to help them remember where the Countries are located.

Adaptations for Special Learners: This lesson was created for ESL students. Other
adaptations for special learners will be as follows. Special Learners will be allotted
additional time in completing the worksheet. A bilingual teacher assistant will also be
available to assist those who need additional help.

Supplemental Activities:

Extensions: An additional activity will be provided to those who want/need it in the


form of writing additional sentences on the back of the worksheet. Another option is
to have the students label Countries on a blank World map.

Remediation: Playing Bingo and additional games played with the large laminated
Continent/ Country cards will be used to help those student that need additional
confirmation.

Assessment / Evaluation: The evaluation process will be done informally. Monitoring


the students involvement in the activities will be done during the lesson. I will confirm that
the students can locate each Country on a World map, as well as recite the Country names.
At the end of the lesson the students will complete a writing worksheet and I will check
each one individually and give verbal feedback on their performance.

Learner Products: The students will have completed a writing worksheet, Where is the
Country? Those who complete the extension activity will also have labeled a World map
with the names of each Country.
