Film Report
Run Lola Run

1/ What sort of film is this? Does it break any

codes and conventions of this genre?
This could be described as a hybrid genre film as it merges
Crime/Romance/Drama within a single text.
Quite often these type of films would follow a linear
narrative, however Lola offers 3 alternative endings and
so in this respect it definetly breaks certain codes and
conventions.

2/ Does knowing that it fits in this genre

affect the way we read it?
We assume at the beginning of the film that it will follow a
linear narrative, and when it doesnt i found that it jolted
the viewer into a more concentrated viewing of the film, as
you are never quite sure what is coming next.

3/ Who made the Film?

Tom Tykwer made the film, having studied Philosophy at
Berlin Free University, he went on to co-found the
production company X Filme Creative Pool in 1994.
Producing Run Lola Run in1998. Having learned piano
from the age of 8 Tykwer as part of Pale 3, has helped to
compose the music on all his productions.

4/ Who are the intended audience for the

film? What certificate is it aimed at?
With its use of flash frames, a techno soundtrack, and
video game inspired animation all helping to create a fast

moving visual and audible feast, it is aimed at a 15

certificate, with possibly the gamer generation as its main
target audience.

5/ What do you think the offered reading

for this film is? Negotiated and Oppositional
Readings?
A negotiated reading could agree with Tykwers asumption
that we have an element of free will in which path our lives

can take, as it seems Mannis decision making process

creates its own problems, more so for his girlfriend than
him. An oppositional approach could argue that free will
does not exist and that everything is mapped out for you,
taking a more fatalistic approach, meaning the couple are
doomed to failure even with the best possible ending.

you recognise from other media texts? What
conventions are used which are similar?
Lola herself seems to be modelled on the Lara Croft
character in the Tomb Raider computer game, similarly
attired they both find themselves on the run in dramatic
situations, and both have the power to change their
outcomes.
