Statement of Purpose
What do you expect to learn in this internship that relates to your program of study?
The purpose of this internship is to gain a better understanding of the role and function of the Student Leadership and Service
Department in creating a space for students to develop the knowledge, skills, values, and global awareness necessary to foster
leadership and responsible citizenship. This internship will also provide an opportunity to become familiar with the various programs and
positions within Student Leadership and Service at Meredith College.

Objectives and Activities


List each objective in measurable terms, the activities your will undertake to meet the objective, the skills and competencies
that will be developed. It will be helpful if you also reference the ACPA/NASPA Competencies (2010) when discussing the
skills and competencies.
Objective 1: Advise student event planning associations, help plan, and implement Traditions Events.
Activities:
a. Assist with the planning and advising of event planning associations in planning and implementing Traditions Events.
b. Work closely with Student Leadership and Service staff to ensure the traditional component of events remain intact and are
emphasized to student participants.
Skills and Competencies: These activities will increase my advising skills in coordinating between professional staff and student
organizations. These activities will also increase my understanding of linking programs to traditions and values of institutions and my
event planning and implementation skills.
Objective 2: To assist with planning and lead leadership and service information sessions, activities, and events.
Activities:
a. Assist with Organization Officer Training and registering students for Emerging Leaders Seminar Series.
b. Develop and implement a marketing plan for recruiting students for participation in events.
c. Work closely with the Sophie Lanneau Womens Leadership Development Program to coordinate student participation, departmental
and community collaboration, and program sessions.
d. Assist in instructing first-year seminar classes.
Skills and Competencies: These activities will increase my knowledge, skills, and attitudes about what is required of a leader, whether it
be a student leader or a member of the staff, in both an individual capacity and within a process of how individuals work together
effectively to envision, plan, effect change in organizations, and respond to internal and external constituencies and issues. These
activities will also increase my understanding of how connected leadership and service truly are, my presentation skills, and marketing
skills.
Objective 3: To coordinate between the many departments at Meredith College to create successful programs, to better assist students,
and to better understand the organizations structure of a small, private womens college.
Activities:
a. Be open to helping with any other events or tasks as needed.
b. Actively interact with other Meredith College Departments to best serve students and the mission of the Student Leadership and
Service Department.
Skills and Competencies: Working toward the mission o the Student Leadership and Service Department, I will gain understanding of
this departments role within the institutional structure. These activities will also increase my understanding of accessibility of information
and the complementary goals of different departments on campus.

Site Supervisor Agreement

As an Internship Site Supervisor, I will provide the following supervisory, consultation, and mentoring services to the student
affairs intern under my supervision:
1. Submit a current rsum. All internship supervisors must possess at least a masters degree in Higher Education
Administration, College Student Personnel, or related field.
2. Facilitate development of a set of learning goals that the intern will accomplish during the designated 80-hour
internship clock hours while serving as a professional role model for the intern.
2. Provide an orientation to the internship position and make available opportunities designed to expose the intern to the
various characteristics and functional aspects of my administrative unit or course.
3. Provide opportunities for the intern to meet and interact with staff members who work in the unit and others with whom
unit members have professional associations.
4. Assign the intern responsibilities and otherwise establish avenues designed to actively involve the intern in the work of
the unit appropriate to the students level of knowledge and skills.
5. Meet at minimum bi-weekly with the intern on an individual supervisory basis, used to discuss and examine general
issues and information to increase the interns knowledge base.
7. Observe the interns daily work activities and provide formative and summative feedback designed to strengthen the
interns ability to function as a professional in the setting.
8. Provide the intern with the appropriate professional working conditions and environment. Each intern should be treated
as a professional staff member.
9. Sign off on students monthly time records and complete a final internship evaluation to be added to the interns
permanent academic records.
