Childrens Literature can be used to create interest in exploring mathematical topics. Sometimes the
storyline in the literature book creates a mathematical problem in and of itself; other times you as the
teacher can use the story situation to create a problem for the students. The RMC has organized the books
according to the most obvious mathematics in the book (usually from the storyline); however, this should
not limit your creativity in using literature books beyond how they have been shelved in the RMC. For
example, the RMC has shelved the book 1 Hunter as a Counting to (or away from) 10 book because the
storyline (what you read about) is about a hunter who sees animals while hes out hunting. The amounts
of animals he sees increases on each page from one to ten. This books storyline naturally teaches how to
count quantities of objects from one to ten; however, a creative way of using this book is by posing the
question of How many total animals did he see? This type of prompt after reading the book offers an
opportunity to use a counting book as an addition book.
There are many resource books that offer creative uses of literature books! The following are examples:
Math & Literature (K-3), Book Two by Stephanie Sheffield, intro by Marilyn Burns
