ANTS

There are 8800 species of ants. Most species live in the tropics. They don't live in the
polar regions or places with extremely high altitudes.
An ant can lift 5 times its weight and drag an object 25 times its weight. An ant has two
sets of jaws: one for holding things that it carries and one to chew food.
Ants don't have lungs but tiny tubes.
Ants help the environment recycling dead plants and insects, and this is good for the
soil. Ants are decomposers. They also help dispersing seeds.
Ants are omnivores: they eat both plants and animals.
Some ants are farmers. Ants living in the southeastern United States and tropical
Central and South America cultivate a fungus in their nests. To feed the fungus, the
ants cut leaves and take them to the nest. Some species of ants domesticate and take
care of insects and butterfly larvae.

Ants have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The eggs are really the pupa.
There are two types of ants in any nest: reproductive and non-reproductive. The queen
and males are the reproductive ants. The non-reproductive ants are the female
workers. There are also army and driver ants.
If an obstacle breaks up a line of ants, the ants will find the shortest way around the
obstacle and reestablish the line of march.
