Antarctica
Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, containing the geographic South
Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely
south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0
million square kilometres (5.4 million square miles), it is the fifth-largest continent in
area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica
is nearly twice the size of Australia, and about 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice.
The statistics show that at the moment, Antarctica has 0 permanent human residents
due to it being the driest, coldest and windiest continent. There live aproximately 5000
temporary residents that reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered
across the continent. The temperature in Antarctica has reached 89 C (129 F),
though the average for the third quarter (the coldest part of the year) is 63 C
(81 F). Due to the global warming, the floating ice shelves in Antarctica are starting
to melt, leading to annual rise of the sea level. Antarctica has 90% of this worlds ice,
and this phenomenon will eventually cause severe flooding in the future, increasing
the sea level with almost 60 meters.
Falling into the frozen ocean of Antarctica is a great danger. The ocean itself has
a lower temperature than the air in that zone. First of all, as in any water deeper than
2.5 meters, you can drown and lose yourself under the ice, making it impossible for
you to be found. Hypothermia is another risk. When your body temperature becomes
lower than 25, there is a great danger to die, even if someone saves you and tries to
warm up your body. In this situation, you quickly lose all of your senses and die due to
freezing.
Vinson Massif is a large mountain massif that is 21 km (13 mi) long and 13 km
(8.1 mi) wide and lies within the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains. The
massif is located about 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) from the South Pole. Vinson Massif
was discovered in January 1958 by U.S. Navy aircraft. Mount Vinson is the highest
peak in Antarctica, at 4,892 metres (16,050 ft).
As a researcher in Antarctica, you can survive by eating proteins, carbohydrates,
lipids and vitamins and by staying hydrated. A normal diet you should have as a
researcher in Antarctica should start from 3000 calories per day. If you go to Antarctica
as a explorer, stay out in the cold and do physical effort, you have to eat almost 6000
kilocalories per day to stay alive. Even so, the most import thing is keeping yourself
hydrated.
