The Geographic
Information
System is a
system that
refers to all
different types
of geographic
material. (e.g.
Latitude,
Longitude, Zip
Codes,Topograp
hy,
Cartography,
and many
more). This
information can
be used to
make
connections to
geography in
many ways.
The amount of
information is
so broad that it
will be
important for
students to
know how to
explore the
information
system for
future
references.

Students will
understand that they
can discover useful
information about
geography and how to
make use out of the
information they find
from the GIS and
satellite sensing. They
will understand how to
use the information
they find to answer
geographic questions.

Learning
(DO)
Students will
demonstrate
their
knowledge of
this GLCE by
using the GIS
and satellite
remote
sensing to
answer
random
geographic
questions.
(example,
Find the five
oceans and
write them
down from
largest to
smallest) This
web quest
style
assignment
will be
designed to
explore
multiple
aspects of
geography so
students will
be able to
demonstrate
their
knowledge of
the GIS and
satellite
remote
sensing and
how to locate
the
information.

There are
multiple factors
that go into the
distribution of
the population.
Some are
based on
physical
conditions such
as the climate
or the geology
of the land,
while others are
more socioeconomic, and
rely on certain
types of
industries or
other money
influences.
Maps are often
used to display
this type of
information
because it
projects a good
visual on why
certain groups
of people are in
certain
locations.

Human

are anything
contributed to
humans (e.g.
buildings,

Physical

are anything
that is natural

Population
Characteristics
is a term that
refers to
anything used
to define a
population
(birth rate,
death rate,
immigration,
emigration,
population
distribution,
population
density,
growth rate,
ect.) Any
features can
be used to
separate a
region, both
physical
features and
man-made
features. A
physical
feature( e.g.
Grand Canyon,
Atlantic Ocean,
ect.) A manmade
feature(e.g.
Empire
Building, The
Pyramids, The
Leaning
Tower.)
Land-use is
basically how
the humans in
a region use
the land they
live upon. (e.g.
If a group of
people live by
an Ocean their
land-use may
consist of
highly fishing,
If a group lives
inland it may
consist of
farming or
hunting.).

choice. The
student will
then have to
research
population
characteristics,
certain
features, and
land-use for
that region and
apply it to the
map using
symbols and a
legend. After
creating this
map each
student will
give a quick 23 minute
presentation
on what their
map means.
