SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT

Introduction
One of the most important aspects of a science based laboratory course is the data that the
students obtain during experiments. Even though I teach Advanced Placement freshman courses,
most of my students came from a non-AP science class in Junior High/ Middle School. Most of
these middle level classes do not utilize the proper data collection, recording, and analysis
techniques needed for advanced honors courses. This drastically slows down not only the class,
but the learning in the classroom as well. As a Chemistry teacher, I want to make sure that the
students are receiving as much lab time as possible to better understand the concepts being
taught.
Throughout this project students will learn about chemical solutions and their properties.
They will participate in a variety of labs that will involve collecting data, forming graphs/charts,
and analyzing their results using the Vernier computer technology. After each lab, everything
done on the computer can be printed off and placed into their Chemistry notebook that is kept
throughout the first semester. This will allow the students to form conclusions about the
experiment. At the end of the unit, I will collect these notebooks and review the experimental
data and conclusions for each student. Upon doing this, I will be able to view which students are
able to properly analyze experimental data and understand concepts, and which students are
continually struggling. I will be able to leave feedback for each student in their notebook, in
which they can go back and review for their benefit. This will allow these students, and myself,
to see where they have strengths and where they have weaknesses within this course and decide
what further steps should be taken to excel in not only my class, but further lab-based science
courses.

Utilizing this technology will impact a total of 210 freshman students in all of my seven
periods combined this year. Looking towards the future, this technology would impact roughly
600-700 students in my class alone in the next three years. If this technology would be placed in
every laboratory course the impact could exceed thousands of students.

Applicant Biography
I, Meghan Montoya, am a first year teacher here at Corona del Sol High School. I
recently graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelors degree in Secondary
Education. Although I only teach Advanced Placement Chemistry, I also have my certification in
Biology. After a few years teaching, I plan to go back to school to obtain my Masters degree.
Even though this is my first year teaching, I am apart of one of the first generations in
society to be introduced to technology young. I have seen how technology has enhanced and
have become familiar with many apps to utilize in the classroom. As I stated previously, my
classroom contains a Smart Board and a projector. I utilize both often for interactive modules for
my students. Two online apps that I have found useful in my classroom are Padlet and Poll
Everywhere. The interest and concept knowledge of my students has drastically increased since I
began using these apps. My students love anything that allows them to interact and become
apart of a lesson. I believe that technology is a huge part of our future, and not something that
should be shunned away from the classroom.
