Topic Selected: What are the Educational uses of Facebook or other social media (e.g. twitter)
(K-12 or higher education)

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review: It would be equally hard to express the potential

pedagogical value of social media technologies in a better way. For it is the humble
opinion of this researcher, that if social media technologies could be used to effectively
support pedagogical practice by a tiny fraction of how they have impacted human
interactions in other walks of life (such as commerce, politics and religion), that fraction,
- call it a little step, - would represent a gigantic leap in the advancement of
pedagogical practice in the 21st century. (Kivunja, C. 2015)
Due to the ubiquitous nature and pervasive informational function of interactive digital
and mobile technologies, social media (SM) has now transformed from being used
informally in educational settings to gaining formal acceptance by students, faculty, and
administrators (Piotrowski, C. 2015).
The use of socialization networks in the formal and informal communication with pupils
involves a big commitment on the part of the didactical staff. They, alongside the parents,
have the task of shaping the childrens correct axiological grids so that they are able to
select the social desirable behaviors from the inflow of behavioral patterns existent in the
virtual environment (LANGA, C. c. 2015).
As e-learning instructors we appreciate that learners use a wide range of technologies in
their personal lives, but the value of these in formal learning is less well recognised. As
researchers and online learning providers we are embracing the use of learning analytics
and big data to examine learner behaviours, activities, and actions. However we cannot

lose sight of the importance of gaining a deep, qualitative, and multidimensional

understanding of learner experiences with e-learning. Indeed, understanding learner
experiences is vital. Exploring how learners experience e-learning, including the
successes and obstacles they face, will assist learning designers, researchers, and
providers in refining and improving online learning (Alzouebi, K., & Isakovic, A. A.
2014).
Faizi, R., El Afia, A., & Chiheb, R. (2014) investigated the promise of using social media
for enhancing students foreign language skills. Results of the research study
demonstrated that most of the surveyed students claimed they favor the use of these
internet-based applications as these help them improve their four language skills, namely
listening, reading, speaking and writing.

2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection: Social media is a huge ocean. If students can swim or if the teacher is
guiding students then both teacher and student will get the benefit of the ocean.
Otherwise ocean will be a disaster for students who cannot swim. In my opinion using
social media is very important. But the teacher's guide is necessary.
As results of a survey of my students some of them use Twitter, some of them Facebook
and some of them Instagram. I created accounts for all social media and I keep teaching
through social media.
As a teacher we need to follow technology innovations. Of course we dont have enough
time to implement all of them to our class. But most useful ones we can add to our
teaching styles.
